Hi everyone. I just though I would share this link with everyone that I found the other night. This page is a "comparison" site of several online magazine subscription places. One of them has a discount code that will get you an entire year of MR for just 14.95.

I ordered mine last night! Enjoy.

BEWARE! There was a recent topic on the Kalmbach MRR forum about magazine prices. One of the Kalmbach reps chimed in and said that no one other than Kalmbach is authorized to sell MR. Period. They have been having problems with sites like this and are always trying to shut them down.

The same notice has been included within the last few issues of both MR and Trains. I don't remember exactly how it was worded, but I believe that Kalmbach stated that they would NOT honor any "subscriptions" purchased from those other sites....BUYER BEWARE!!!

Yeah, before I dropped my MR subscription I got a letter from Kalmbach stating that I should only order from them due to "fake" subscriptions from other places.

However, I got sick of paying for more and more advertisements each month and general lack of content in the past fews years of MR so I dropped my subscription.

I don't worry about it much. Since the new editor came on board the magazine looks more like a badly designed webpage. I no longer buy it very often.

I haven't suscribed to any magazine for a couple years, I won't go back to MR. I have picked up some excellent issues of Mainline Modeler, or Rail Model Journal....some of the "upper-level" Modelrailroading magazines.

Let me add something to this thread. I tried an Internet subscription through 'Netmagazine' about 2 years ago when my MR supscription through Kalmbach ran out. I figured for $20, I was not out too much. To my surprise, I received my first copy in less than 2 months, and it now arrives before the 1st every month(the last issue arrived on the 27th of January).
This worked so good, it then ordered Trains and RMC via the same service - Same good results. I just 'renew' via the Internet when they send me an email notice.

Now the strange part. Last month I got a 'renewal' letter from Kalmbach for my MR subscription! I do not have a subscription through Kalmbach! And this month I just got renewal letters fron both Kalmbach(Trains) and RMC(Carstens). The Kalmbach letters had the colored 'notice' about unauthorized subscription services. I have sent Kalmbach an email asking about this. So far I have gotten a 'confirmation' email, but no response. What I suspect is that the Kalmbach subscription department is trying to keep the subscription rate up(it has been dropping each year) and is telling us that there are no authorized subscription services.
I suspect that Kalmbach is selling in bulk to these services at a deep discount, and direct shipping them. For Kalmbach, this can be a very good thing:

o - No cost of subscription service or processing(the subscription service provider does all of this).

o - Magazine is lost or damaged in the mail?(call the 'provider).

o - Kalmbach has a steady revenue stream each month as they can set a minumum number of magazines they have to buy to get the 'deal'.

The part I do not understand is that Kalmbach and Carstens 'know' when my 'subscription service' expires. Are they doing the direct shipping to me for the 'provider'? Also, a friend got a subscription for $30/year from a kid selling magazines for a school fund raiser. So this 'no authorized' seller is bogus info from the Kalmbach rep.....

    Jim-

Your name was collected, and is being sold to people who buy specialty mailing lists. Nothing new about it. Been going on for decades.

I used to subscribe to those same magazines. And was getting stuff like you've described. After dropping them all, within a couple of years, am no longer receiving the mail ads. My name has been dropped.

The past two years, I have bought more issues of RMJ, than of RMC and MR combined the past 10 years.

Thanks guys for all the info... I guess like Jim said, I figured I couldn't go wrong for 15 bucks. I'm interested to know what their reply is, if they ever get back to you Jim. Only time will tell if I'll actually even get my MR subscription or not. :)
