I had a good weekend modeling. I changed gears some. On Friday I went to Mitchell’s Hobbies in Wilmington and found a Walthers Medusa Cement Company kit and bought it. I have been assembling it since. I had a lot trouble with the silos fitting together and had to use white putty to covert he joints. I also set it up on the layout and laid out the tracks to serve it. I finished painting the weights for the Athearn 2-bay hoppers and the trucks for the Atlas 2-bay hoppers.
ZOOM IN I did more weathering. And I used the felt tip pen method. For the picture I had my son to hold the background and the computer for more water in the foreground. Wolfgang
Crawled arround on the floor of the layout room with full sized kraft paper and templates, just fiddling arround with layoutideas. Bitter cold here and my corner of the house isn't well insulated or heated yet, that should be my next project.
I took some more photo's using the Helicon Focus software system. I started to paint and weather the Unitrack I need for the addition to the JJJ&E. The Unitrack roadbed was first airbrushed a grimy black including the rails. Then I started to handpaint the rails a mineral red which covers the grimy black. This gives a convincing rust color to the rails. I used a 18/0 sable brush to handpaint the rails. Four pieces of Unitrack take about an hour to do. After all the rails are painted, I'll use RailTie Brown for the ties and then weather them with some antique white. Then I paint all the spike heads with either raw sienna or burnt sienna or a combination of the two. This is very time consuming. After the track is laid I'll ballast the Unitrack using a very fine Natural rock ballast. But first I must finish painting and weathering all the Unitrack, close to 100 feet. Stay cool and run steam...
Nice job Wolfgang!! If nothing else I need to build a diorama for picture taking. I might have to move soon, and don't have my layout up and going at the moment.
Finally finished my BNSF SD40-2 ex. CN SD40 project. I had to graft an Atlas GP cab on to it because the cab glazing came up missing.
Wolfgang, very very nice, I can almost smell the fumes of the deisel! Bob, you are an insperation on all of use Unitrak users! Scott, nice job on the Duece! My wife loves those engines, I painted up two for her. One patch BN and one BNSF. Nice work! I started a group of Rock Island 40 foot trailers in N for sale at an upcomming show.
Well, I did not get as far as I would have liked on the new layout. Spent most of the weekend taking up the old track and removing the spikes from the plywood. Pulling the old wire out was fun too. Lots of dust and dirt build up made the wires espically easy to pull through the U nails. The old 12 x 7 plywood and benchwork came down on Sunday night and I began the assembly of the new bench work. I was able to get 2 6 x 2, 1 5 x 4 and 1 5 x 3 before I was just too worn out to continue. I have discovered that I am not able to do the same amount of work in 3 days that I could 15 years ago. Oh well
Very Nice Wolfgang. One of my boys was convinced it was real. PSG, Thanks for those steps in weathering the Unitrack. On 2 X 4 layout got the Woodland Scenics Road Risers & Inclines glued down, had the kids help cast some hydrocal rocks and airbrushed a couple Kato Bridges-Plate Girder & Truss. The colors match the favorite colors of the boys-Red for the Truss and Blue for the Plate. The Red turned out well I thought but the blue is a little bright so will have to be darkened. This was my first time using an airbrush.
This method I've learned from my friend Peter. I'm going to build a website with this method. If you like to be an Alpha-tester... weathering I will take more pictures and do a better text. The pens are water based and there're two pens non-water based. Happy toooot Wolfgang
I read here often for the inspiration, but only post occassionally. The wife and I have been expecting the baby to come at the end of this month, which meant that Dad needed to vacate the nursery. So train time has been limited for the past couple of months. Well, this weekend's accomplishment is the fact that our daughter decided to grace us with her presence Thursday the 16th. Thankfully, everyone got to come home Sunday and we are all doing well. Now to see if I have any train time left. Should be an interesting couple of months to come.
Mike, Congratulations on you new addition! Enjoy your new baby. There will be time for trains right now. New babies sleep a lot. It is when they get a little older that your train time becomes limited.
