RS3 vs RSD4/5

    I have both of these Alco engines in N scale made by Atlas and/or Kato. (Both old and new versions.) It appears that the shell and frame/walkways are the same for both the 4 axle and the 6 axle versions. Is this correct? Or is this just a convenience of the manufacturer for N scale? Maybe different in HO or O scale?

    Undserstand that this is correct. All three models used the same body and frame. The only difference (and watch the Alco experts come out of the woodwork on this) is that the RSD-5 had a larger capacity generator.

    Not notable from the outside.

    Welcome to TrainBoard. I too think they are basically the same "externally" except for the 4 or 6 axle truck, but I am sure there is a vent or piping detail that Alco-haulics will insist are different. [​IMG]

    RS3 - 4 axles - 1600 hp
    RSD4 - 6 axles - 1600 hp
    RSD5 - 6 axles - 1600 hp and a larger main generator(same as used in th 'PA' series). The RSD5 was just an 'extra cost' option for the 6 axle version of the engine.

    From what I've seen, the RSDs were for low-speed drag service (heavy switching, coal or other mineral service).

    Thanks for the info.

    There are pictures in the SP Historic diesels series with sets of five RSD5 helpers moving along Tehachapi. Eventually replaced by SD7s and SD9s, I think.
