Hi guys, I need some technical help.

I am kitbashing some Athearn GP38-2s into 39-2s, and while I am at it, I'm going to convert them to DCC. Since contact will be really important I am thinking of replacing the stock steel wheels with nickel silver ones.

Does anyone know what part number replacement wheels I need for this job? I'm thinking of NWSL wheels for the project, as they seem most available, but I don't know which ones I need.

    Thanks!

Well, you have six choices. Athearn uses 42" wheels which is wrong. 40" is correct.

0.100 width will run on all track
0.088 is semi finescale. Requires good track.
0.072 is finescale. Requires real good track.

    Prototype width runs between 5 1/2" and 6". The 0.072 is about 5 3/4".

Myself, I run 0.088 so I can run on other peoples layouts.

    #7141-4, 0.110" wide, 40" dia.
    #7142-4, 0.110" wide, 42" dia.
    #7241-4, 0.088" wide, 40" dia.
    #7242-4, 0.088" wide, 42" dia.
    #7641-4, 0.072" wide, 40" dia.
    #7642-4, 0.072" wide, 42" dia.

You have fun now that I have totally confused you :D .

    Have the proper numbers now.

Naw, it was all straightforward... until you used the same part numbers for everything! :D

Thanks! An invaluable help! When I get them running I'll post a pic or two.
