This was painted up real quick and not glued in place, did it just to see how the size looks.

Later I will paint the rails a lighter rustier color.

Z scale code 40 rail on PC ties with Roberts excellent laser ties in-between :D

Ballast is Smith & Sons from Scenic Express, called Penn-Ohio #50, and fine cinders. I assume the #50 refers to the screen size, but cannot find any standard for screen. It seems different depending on what wire you use.

I like the color, but still looks a little bit big, what do you guys think:

Here is some N scale ballast to compare with:

The cinders look a bit smaller:

How is Highball Product ballast? is it finer than this? The ties are spaced to match MT flex to give you a reference point.

Chris, nice track work. In looking at your pictures I notice that you are not the usual type of couplers, so what are you going to use.

Here is a couple shots of Arizona Rock & Gravel N Scale Copper Range Green ballast on Peco Z Scale Flextrack painted Floquil Roof Brown for comparison.

It would be cool if we could get everyone to post photo's of their ballast so we can build up a library of different ballast brands, colors, and methods that we can use to help decide which we want to use.

Chris, looks great, it looks like you have a prototypical joinner. Did you make that yourself? Really looks convincing!

I E-mailed Arizona to order some NP and PRR ballast, they said they were out of both of those colors until next month.

The #50 looks smaller in Don's photo, maybe I'm just getting to much of a close-up on mine.

Thanks. Got it. Essentially I did what you suggested the first time, but I missed the IMAGE button, so instead of a photo I got the link. ..."Next time" ...don

Ok, here is a closeup of my track. It is marklin, and I used woodlan scenes fine cinders. Before ballast I painted the track with grimey black. Also notice the track by the grain elevator, I tried to create a look of abandoned track barely visiable to go with the old elevator, so I cut into the base and shoved the rails into it to crete the sunken down look. It was fun! [IMG] [IMG]

I call ARIZONA ROCK AND MINERAL CO. and ordered his last two bags of Copper Range Green Granite. I really like how it looks in Mr. Rays photos. The guy said the N scale stuff was a pain in his but and basically made from left over HO stuff. He sounded like he wanted out of the scenery business....It also sounds like he goes out in the back yard, grabs a handfull, grinds it, and screens it. You gotta love Z Scale!
