    Hey Tom,

Forgive my ignorance but what's wrong with being a New Yorker.
I've never been to New York all I know it's about 8 times the size of the city I live in Canada.

as in NYC? I lived there for a while and did not much care for it, but spent a year in Rochester upstate and it was beautiful.

I grew up in California but married a woman from NY, so I lived in Rottenchester NY for a couple years and after grad school in Indiana moved to Sorryexcuse NY from 1994-2009. That was more than enough time living in an economically depressed city with lake effect snow. Property taxes were insanely high as well. Of course the summers were nice but all too short. I'm in northern Virginia now and it's a big improvement.

I actually loved Rochester, I worked mostly at the UR and Children's Hospital complex, but also to many locations in the Tri-State and PA. I lived just down Elmwood in Brighton. Spent many a weekend in the Finger Lakes, and my gf at the time had moved back to Cornwall to take care of her dad so spent a lot of time in the Adriondacks as well. Really beautiful areas imo.

I will, however, have to agree in-part about Syracuse, at least when I was there 2011-12. That was when they were dredging out Onadaga and had huge tile running out of town into a farmer's field, where they would literally burn it off. Cobalt, mercury, all that fun - out of the water, into the atmosphere. Shibby.

Have not been back since but have heard the area is really nice now.

Is that where you're from? If not, Ft Ticonderoga would be a great day-trip from there. Super cool.

...unless, you know, you've already been there 100x ;)

I enjoy visits to NY (my sister lives on 20+ acres near Schenectady) especially in summer, but certainly would not want to live there year-round. That's okay, there are plenty of folks that would not enjoy TX year-round either. Even I don't enjoy it in August!

I had two bad experiences in Krotchfester (as my sisters used to call it). They used to joke there were only two seasons in Rochester, Winter and Street Repair. Before I moved there, I visited one of my sisters who was a student at Eastman school of music. While staying the night, I woke to find a window busted out and my CB radio and cassette tape player stolen out of my car. I had to tape up the window for my drive back to Indiana. Later, when I moved to Rochester, I lived in the 19th Ward. The guy who lived above us was a drug dealer, although a nice guy. While living in that area my car got vandalized. So I can say my experience in Rochester was not good. The Lilac festival was nice but during my stay there, it seemed the city had a light of blight. And then there was the big Marriott hotel that was erected down town but due to a dispute over the budget, it sat unfinished and an eye sore for several years.

Syracuse had nice summers and I went to Beaver Lake a lot and skated in summers on the lake bike path that ran along Liverpool. But the economy was so bad during and after the recession of 2008/9 that many businesses around Carrier Circle were boarded up and there was a lot of decay.

But because I did not grow up in the northeast, I was never happy with the winters in upstate NY. I went back up visiting my daughter between 2009 and her moving to Owego for her job with Lockheed Martin about 5 years ago, so that's me probably not traveling to Syracuse anymore.

People who grow up in Syracuse generally like it. My problem is my dad was in the Air Force and we ended up in California and I lived there from age 7 thru 24, so my "normal" was mild weather. There was no snow where I lived - and if I wanted to ski, which I did, I drove up into the Sierra's for the day.

When I lived in Syracuse, I was in Liverpool the entire time. Going roller blading along Lake Onondaga was what helped me to keep my sanity after I got separated and later divorced. The Carousel Mall was supposed to become another Mall of American but all the great plans kind of fizzled, but they did add-on to it new sections. But it never lived up to the original plans that they displayed.
