Question AZL SP E9...?

Hi all, I've been looking at the AZL 62616 SP E8/9 in bloody nose version:


I think it looks really good. However, on the net I cannot find any info on such a loco with the # 9047, the only one I can find pictures of is 6018. It seems SP had only one of this type of loco(?)

So, is the 9047 just fantasy...? Why would they not use 6018 then...?

Apart from that, could you guys help me out with info on:
- which routes did the SP E9 run?
- which cars did it pull?
- was it only in use for passenger trains or also for freight?

It's an error. AZL gave dealers the choice to wait for correct numbers or to accept delivery as is. I chose to hold off and wait for correct numbering. Still waiting.

6018 was the one and only E8 that SP owned.

They generally ran with as passenger or fast mail trains. Mail trains would be some combination of heavy and lightweight baggage, mail storage and RPOs. Generally they would have a heavyweight coach and a 10-1-2 and/or 12-1 sleepers.

Thanks Frank and Mark, for your information. Since the outside looks of E-8 and E-9 are pretty much the same, I could/should have been 6047 instead of 9047... From this foto I figure maybe in later days it also ran with shorter passenger trains?

The E#A units typically ran out of LA with SP using PAs for the Northern California mountains. By 1958 when the bloody nose scheme started, passenger trains were rapidly shrinking. A post-war 20 car Daylight was reduced to 5 or 6. Also into to early 1960s SP ran a number of passenger locals, frequently just an engine and a coach.
The image you selected appears to be the Del Monte,
A San Francisco to Pacific Grove (Monterey) train consisting primarily of a first class lounge and a couple of coaches. Very rare to see anything other than a GP on the route.

We have waited to order the correct road-numbered SP E9 shells. Expect that we will do it soon. We had been waiting on some other E unit related products that we wanted to group into one PO. That PO should be ready to go this month. Best, Hans (AZL)
