Well my Osborn Models kit arrived after a two week journey from Canada. This is an accurate model of a 45 foot Northumberland Strait Lobster Boat that I am making into a Pacific Deep water Crab boat. Over the next at least a week I will post progress on the N scale ship build. This is a well done laser cut wood kit that requires care and patience to build and not hurry things. At least 54 parts on the wood sprues. Osborn offers other ship models in N scale all small vessels. With the kit is a very good detailed set of instructions.

Last night I applied Vallejo hull red paint to the bottom on both sides and Vallejo primer to the frame members again both sides while still in the sprue to prevent any warping. When it comes time to cut and release my tool of choice is a single edge razor blade. Much sharper and thinner blade than an Exacto blade.

Later on today I will assemble the frame members to the hull bottom using Elmer's multi purpose white glue -all.

Well thank heavens for using water soluble glue because I mislocated a bulkhead up forward and was able to apply a little water and in about 15 minutes had the part where it should have been. All the bulkheads were installed on the keel and then I could proceed with the main deck level and on cabin wall as per instructions. The main deck is very thin wood so applied a light coat of super thin ACC to strengthen it. I also filed out all the slots a smidget because fitting the parts into the slots was very tight. As per the instructions I am now going to apply a very light coat of paint again using Vallejo acrylics.

The metal object in the pic is a dental pick. The same one that the dentist sticks in there and asks does that hurt?

And with a single coat of white. And now test fitting the foredeck and top rails. From this I know this is going to be a bear to get set.

Well last night I managed to get the foredeck and railing assembly on. Complicated by the fact that it curves upward from stern to bow. One a glue set I gave it a single coat of Vallejo white acrylic. Just a single coat as I want this to be a working ship that has seen lots of service at sea. I also have given a single coat of paint to the sides to get ready to put on. One side painted only. Before those hull sides get put on I have to assemble and install the pilot house and cabin.

Well consulting the instructions it said the next step was the hull side. I found that small rubber bands held the sides in place best and I only applied glue to the stern half letting it set up before bending the bow sections. For that I used masking tape to secure in place. I also secured the sliding door guides in place to the pilot house. And for glazing in the door window I went the easy route and used some diluted Micro Kristal Klear. There is glazing supplied for the pilot house windows and if I have issues fitting it then I will just go with the Micro Kristal Klear. So in about 1 hour the tape will come off and I will finally start the pilot house assembly.

That slab of Cedar wood is slated to become an 80 to 100 foot Inter Island freighter. The cedar is scrap from the cedar boards used to line a closet walls. Smooth grain and does not warp plus light weight.

Well had my first major oopsie. When trying to slide the starboard side of the cabin/pilot house I snapped the section off. Note to dumb stupid old geezer senile self, treat all very thin wood with thin ACC. Any how I recovered and the section is back together. The pilot house walls curved inward toward the bow giving a degree of difficulty assembling them to the deck.

Well I did not like the gaps in the decals so mixed some Vallejo paints to match and filled them in. Also did not like how the supplied glazing fit and the trouble I was going to go through to install it and instead used a slightly diluted with water Micro Kristal Klear as glazing. Installed the diesel exhaust pipe and the twin radio antennas. Also installed the line hoist for the carb pots on the starboard side. A cable connects the crab pots and is connected to a buoy.
The line hoist is swung out and the cable snagged and thread through the hoist and as the ship runs forward the crab pots are lifted one at a time swung on deck to be emptied and rebaited then thrown over again. Now assembling the roof top appliances for mounting.

    Hi John,
Just recieved the same kit and plan to make it a Coast Guard payrol boat. Thanks for the tip about treating thin pieces with ACC.

This model is somewhat similar to the 41 foot utility boat which there is a fair amount of info on Google. Used around Bays and inland waters. Carried 2 .50 caliber machine guns.

    Nice work!

I never thought of this before, but do most n-scale models of boats not model the full hull, but just to the waterline? I'm thinking what if you wanted to model a boat in a lift, or dry dock, etc.?

Osborn sells the full hull if you want to model it that way. And some of Tomytec's models feature a bottom that can be removed giving a water line. Sylvan's line are water line only.

I built a Sea Port Model Works "Mighty Little Tug" kit last year, which is a waterline version. It is also offered in full hull. I do not recall, without looking, how many, if not all of their offerings come both ways.

Has anyone tried to "float" a full hull model boat in the resin as they were casting their water feature?

I guess most scenes with boats are in murky enough water that you would not see noticeably below the waterline... And given the density and surface tension of the resin before it hardens, it might not look/work the way real water would anyway.

I did but with tinted water and very successfully. The Ocean Research ship Sandecker is a full hull sunk into the resin and the USCG buoy tender is another one. I would not try it with any casting resin that heats up as it cures or you will end up with a warped and distorted hull. The Famowood Glaze Coat I use from Home Depot produces minimal heat if any. And it is cheaper for the amount you get than the modeling water material out there. About twice as much material and costs far less.

    Both vessels are full hull.

Well after almost a week of working in the early morning and the evening the deep sea crab boat is done and already crewed with a 5 man crew. Here it is posed with the hull of the 105 foot hull of the interisland freighter under construction.

I did not like how the top stripe of the peel and stick decals was working out so applied a regular decal that is a little wider. For the rest of the vessel I used the peel and stick decals. No room for a lifeboat so I gave it a inflatable life raft, the orange thingy on the cabin roof. Made some coils of rope from my stock of ship rigging and the marker buoys are attached to the crab pots with line that is coiled. Both work tables are located midships and added some more coils of line at random spots. Only one coat of paint, this is a working boat.

And my earlier built deep sea crabber that is either going to be scrapped or redone.

Seriously considering getting a 2nd wood vessel. However the shop is closed right now until the 2nd of August.

I love the Sandecker/Numa reference! On my old Ntrak module I had "Pitt's Used cars" Had a Shelby and a couple others with a bathtub with an outboard as the sign.
