When I first visited my folks in 1998 after they settled in Goleta I used to borrow Dad's mountain bike to cycle down to the track , I was using a Sony 8mm camcorder just set up on anything handy as I didn't have a tripod and just set it going while I photographed them on an EOS 10 (Still got it in the loft somewhere).

Forgot I posted this on youtube back in 2013

Unlike this time the the sun was nowhere to be seen on some days

Contrast to the last couple of weeks

The early morning sun was a bit evil as the Pacific Coast line runs nearly due East-West hence the flare seen on some of the clips

    Great videos! (y)

Love those old Amtrak ones! I believe Amtrak 231 "Operation Lifesaver" F40PH is in Portland, OR. It was saved by the museum there.

Worth another trip to the U.S for me but not anytime soon sadly.

Do need to get up to Oregon though, things to do and people to meet, maybe when I retire?

Just started looking back at my stuff from 1994. It will need re-scanning, as will my head as I look at some of the pictures like the Turboliner and to be honest I can't really remember taking it.

I'm not coming down with Summertimers yet (Sometimes I remember and sometimes I don't) but every now and then I think, 'No idea'. When I first got my Epson V500 photo scanner with the ability to scan in 6x7cm transparencies I started working through a load of Fuji Reala E6 shot on a Mamiya RB67 roll film camera. Came across two rolls of film shot at Dorchester West in the South West of England and cannot remember ever having been there

in the interim, the mention of 'Varnish' reminded me of 2018 when I was stuck in Goleta after the mudslides

I'll explain more in my next post

in 2018 News came through that Dad was in a bad way and maybe I ought to get out to California a.s.a.p

I got into LAX in early January and on the way up from LAX could still smell the smoke from the wildfires as we drove up 101. Sadly Dad passed but it now meant I had to make sure Mom, who was also very elderly, needed to be set up for life without him. A lot of work but in the off moments I headed down to the Coast line.

On the 9th it started to rain, and rain, and rain. In Goleta it was bad but the area is coastal and relatively flat but up in the vallys it was really, really bad.

The rest you will know Highway 101 closed in many areas, S.P coast line washed out. helicopters constantly patrolling the Montecito area and it was all over the News channels. Multiple casualties and biblical destruction.

The first thing I caught after the event was convoy of M-WAY vehicles heading east through Goleta to try and re-open the line

Once sorted Amtrak found itself as the only means, other than airline flights to get past the blockage down to Ventura county

Which meant lots of unusual passenger traffic

It seems an idyllic scene with not a hint of the carnage a few miles south

Dash 8-32 BWH #2052 on Train 769. First time I'd seen one of these in the flesh and what a beast they are. 15th of January 2018 at Goleta

Sister engine #2051 at Goleta has a most imposing appearance as it waits to depart to San Luis Obispo the folowing day

That's a great capture Russell. A lot of fans (including me) would overlook such an amusing detail. It brings me joy to think that someone took the time to plan it out and apply the paint. (y)
