Trying to resurrect this for a friend. The motor is shot and I have an email in to Atlas to see if they have replacements. This is the older arrangement with the nylon flywheel insert so I have removed the flywheels and set them aside. Has anyone re-motored one of these with a motor from another lokie (U25B for example)? One of the newer "scale speed" motors would be good but not sure the flyweights can be pulled and replaced easily enough. Thoughts?

Atlas is usually good about responding and having replacement motors and knowing too which motors substitute from other Atlas locomotives.

I have gotten good results with the motors from Motors (tramfabriek.nl).
Usually the 0816D. Either with their silicon tubing or NWSL universals.
You will have to devise a new motor mount; the Atlas likely won't work.

If you have a picture I may have one in my spare motor box...

    Hmmm...
I happen to have an old Atlas/Kato SD7/9 which has only been on the track once or twice in the past 30 years. It has an undecorated shell which could be swapped out and your friend will be ready to run in minutes. I am looking to sell my undecorated unit... perhaps we can discuss via Trainboard PM. 20220418_234628.jpg

The one on the lower left of bin is the Atlas/Kato.

BTW... all of those undecorated and SP decorated Kato units are also available for purchase.

I just remotored one of these a few months ago. I searched ebay for Atlas Kato motor and found a good fit for $25. The same vendor sells the U25b you mentioned. I think the only difference was that the U25b motor came with flywheels. Not sure though.

Hopefully I will get a reply from Atlas. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I notice by that Atlas does have the U25B motor sans flywheel listed so that may be the way we go.
