I am in the process of detailing one of the old atlas SD24's. When I am finished, I would like to have a better power unit under it. Does anyone know what would fit this shell?

    Here's a few suggestions:

    P2k S7/9 chassis
    Railpower SD7/9 chassis
    Athearn SD9 chassis (modified)
    Atlas SD35 chassis (new)

I sure would like to see that model when it's finished. I have aspirations of a pair of SD26s from the Santa Fe and that shell is a great starting point. And by the way, I think you can hardly go wrong with the P2K drive and it's going to be much easier on your pocketbook to do a pair if you stay away from the Atlas SD35 new model (even though those new Atlases are a dream). Best of luck,

I don't know how far you want to go with your motor and chasis. However, you might want to point your search engine to Alliance Locomotive works or to Helix Humper motors. They make pretty nice can motors that drop into almost any chasis. I would get the upgraded version where they provide the flywheels too. You may have to go to Atlas for the Atlas wheels.

One other thing. You may get a new motor from Atlas a lot cheaper. The motor they have been using the past few years is fairly interchangeable. I know I bought a motor for a GP40 from Atlas and used it to replace the Kato/Atlas motor that managed to get damaged in my Atlas ALCO C-424. The results were perfect. The speeds matched up extremely well too.

<font color="336633">The 2 SD24's I have run very well concidering how old they are, but if you want to replace it then the best bet will be the Life Like Proto 2000 SD7 or SD9.

what ya going to do with the old chassis? As I could do with a spare for a kit bash job I have in mind.....

I will let you know. Going to have to do some studying to see which way I want to go.
