There used to be a nice history on model railroader but my bookmark 404s now. I have about 100 cars with short shank roller bearings, the other 3 (hi-cube, very long flat) are medium shank.

I belong to a DARE model RR club for youngsters. In the defense of the Rapido coupler, we convert all of our N scale cars to Rapido couplers. These things are indestructible which is a requirement because these kids have a dollar store mentality. So cheap and indestructible are desirable qualities. All of our train equipment is donated. Several years ago, the club was written up by the local paper as a local interest story. The piece was picked up by the wire services and several papers around the country ran it as a filler in their later additions. The result was a constant flow of train stuff gleaned from attics and basements from around the country. A lot of it has, seemingly, no value like the old Athearn F units with the rubber band drive but surprisingly we found a guy who actually paid money to buy them.

N scale stuff that comes in with MT or other type couplers get changed over to Rapido's which I, being the sole N scale guy in the club, supply. The MT's get stored and later sold in bulk.
