Suggestions on applying rust effect to Rokuhan track?

I know that if I were that interested in a prototype layout I wouldn't have gone with Rokuhan, but I do want to give it as much realism that I can. I started to relay the track on my layout (shown in an earlier post) and started using one of the rust pens available from Woodland Scenics. I only got a few sections done before the tip totally disintegrated and made a mess of things. I think just brushing on the color will be far easier and allow for more precision but would like suggestions on what product to use. I've read where others have simply inserted a brush into the pen after removing the felt tip but was hoping for a more elegant solution. Has anyone here used a brush-on product they would recommend? I really don't want to spray and re-ballast.

I was able to place in my cart, but didn't take it any further. Have you confirmed that this is discontinued?

Osborn's had a listing, but no way to add it to a cart. Walthers had it listed "out of stock". There were other links I found referenced on different boards, but all of those where code 404. I did find a link to the manufacturer, and sent an email but no response so far. However, your response motivated me to do a deeper dive and I did find the products on Pacific Rail Systems' site in Canada (ehh). Is that where you saw it? Please send a link if other. I'd prefer to avoid international shipping. Thanks!

They had a price, but didn't have a way to add it to the cart. I ended up realizing that RRAY had already included the link to PWRS in his original post. I'm waiting to have an account activated and will be ordering from them soon. Thanks!

I finally received my Rusty Rails paint and applicator and quickly determined that it was a waste of time... at least in "Z". I earlier tried one of the rust pens and it too proved to be less than satisfactory. I read a post on another board where the author had used blue masking tape to block off the areas that didn't need to be painted but trying to do that around corners seemed to be pretty daunting. I have however come up with a solution that may be something others have tried, but if so, I couldn't find any mention. The problem with the solutions I originally tried was that no matter how careful I was I always ended up slipping and spreading brown paint on the ties or the ballast. The solution I finally arrive at was to use a product called Peel-Tek instead of tape to mask off the ties, spikes and roadbed. Basically, you just brush it on where you want to mask and then paint after it dries. When the paint is dry you just peel it off. I'm just sharing my test track below, but with a little practice I was able to do about six feet of laid track over a six-hour period including drying time. Take a look at the process and let me know what you think!

I toyed with getting an airbrush and spraying the whole shebang, but although I plan to add ballast at some point I didn't want to live with the dark track in the interim.
