Welcome back everyone to not only another gateway to the weekend but the gateway to autumn! It's a special long weekend for most of us here in the states as we celebrate Labor Day. I hope those in the North East areas of NY and NJ are doing okay after the interruption of Ida. While I do not watch mainstream television, I do know that the storm had a deadly impact on that region so I hope our members here from that area are safe.

    Now to the modeling.

Saturday: No modeling for me as this is the annual event my wife enjoys from her childhood, the Hoopston IL Sweet Corn festival. Yup, you know you're in Illinois when there is an entire festival dedicated to the primary crop of the region! It is essentially a county fair with corn and a big car show. We'll be bringing our Mustang and hopefully be set up next her Dad and his Mustang for a fun day of cars, all you can eat sweet corn (for free!), a fish sandwich and all the usual trappings of a fair. I think my diet will be on holiday that day. We are looking forward to the day.

Sunday: With less then a week away from its grand showing, I have a lot to do with the Athearn switching layout. The buildings are about 90% done, just needing the roof on each one. If I can get all the ballast work done and simple static grass and scenery done, I can call it "done" and spend any time left on smaller details and weathering.

Labor Day: I'm planning on having most of the work done on the switching layout to enjoy some time working on some other activities that have been forgotten about. I'm leaving this day open as once we get back to work on Tuesday, it will be all hands on deck for the big Horizon show, RC Fest, and getting the Athearn portion up and ready.

So how about you? What do you have planned for the last weekend of summer? Let us know. We'll assemble again on Tuesday, the 7th to see how our collective, long weekend went. Until then, have a great long weekend, be safe, stay healthy and as always...

    High Greens!

Big event for the weekend is moving my son, and his roommates, into their new rental. A small garage/storage unit and our 2-car garage to empty, plus some old Gorilla racks to assemble. As with most moves, I expect the unexpected. If that get's done then I hope for a chance to work on the following:

UP 2295 Drivers: I completed the fixture for holding the driver. Test cuts were successful. Waiting for the overlays to arrive.

UP 2295 Sand Domes: I am working on a solution for a boring tool. Once that is done I can cut some brass.

UP 2295 Tender Truck Bolsters: These are just an idea at this point so not sure where that will lead.

    Pictures on Tuesday!

    Stay safe,

Modeling will happen, just not sure what.

Also starting to design some scratch build cars. Gonna get interesting for the next month. I need to order parts today.

TODAY; cardiologist appointment to see about valve issue. Hopefully it will be another couple years before repair, then home to mow if the ground is dry enough by then.
Hobby wise today, I want to continue tying up odds and ends from the workbench reconfiguration. I need to modify a couple plastic Plano shelving units to support the layout addition and fit my spraybooth, compressor and a small table top watchmakers bench that holds airbrushing supplies.

SATURDAY; After a couple hours yard work, cut window filler piece for spray booth vent. Cut down door for top shelf/layout addition support and level out top shelf.

SUNDAY; Finish reorganization of workbench and painting area. Play with my airbrush on some non model pieces.

    MONDAY;
Clean up section of cellar floor in preparation for sealing and start preparing driveway for sealing.
Install track filler pieces and jumper wires at layout seam. Run trains.

Ambitious bunch here. :) (Cardstock rules!) Earlier today the initial construction of the porch railings did not turn out well. Back to the drawing board. For the time being we will go with what we have. I will make another attempt at railings next week. Saturday is chore day. Sunday, planning. Monday is wide open!

The happy thing about an enlarged photo is that all the problems are visible. :D I am planning additional yard details, hopefully next week also. Seems like trim lines need to be more crisp. Lesson for next project. It is difficult to rework a completed model.

I hope everybody has a safe and fun Labor day. (y)

Friday: Flying from Colorado back to the Cleveland area today.

Saturday: Pick up the dog from the kennel then hope to get to the club for running some trains and a little decaling in the evening.

Sunday: Continue with the decaling and start on building some more car kits.

Monday: Need to start checking on some of my steam motive power for running quality so they can then be painted.

If the weather stays nice I will be working outside. I have gardens to weed, bushes and a weeping cherry tree to trim, and a bush to remove.

I would like to work on the Walthers Union Station kit and run some trains. With the nice weather I may try to find something that needs airbrushing.

    Happy Friday All!

Looking forward to 3 days away from the office. Hopefully the phone won't ring much either. Do have a small amount of yard work to do and two pickets on the fence to replace.

Modeling wise, nothing specific planned, maybe some more work on freight cars. Guess we shall see what plays out. Hope you all have a safe and happy labor day weekend!

    Happy Labor Day weekend all.

Tomorrow is all modeling. No set plans. Again as always, the first cup of coffee and walking around the train room will dictate what happens. Sunday will be modeling and grilling. Have several racks of St. Louis ribs that I'll smoke on the Big Green Egg. Monday back to full modeling. AND! As a bonus, I took Tuesday off as well and reserve the right to extend "modeling weekend" for a 4th day!

Be safe everyone and enjoy whatever time off you have.

Big Green Egg, please do explain? Or photos :)

And this weekend, continue work on diorama. And I have a Walthers DQ Grill & Chill N Scale kit arriving Saturday. Can't wait to see it, and build it. I really enjoyed the Modern Gas Station Walthers kit. I hope this is the same quality? I am really liking their kits. Had never built one before the gas station. And I am a big fan of molded colors cause I stink at painting. Although I might attempt it on this one. Wish me luck! Not sure if I am up to it though. And I want the fancy paint job. Will have to see.

Don't think I can pull it off though? If not, a solid color, or leave it as comes.

I'm guessing the 'Big Green Egg' is a large pressure cooker or maybe a grill?

    No fun modeling plans…

When the remnants of Ida passed our region, we were without power for several hours, it also rained several inches and flooded the basement since the sump pump couldn’t run. Several boxes in the layout space got wet, but no damage.

So i have a bunch of repacking and organizing to do this weekend, may as well take the opportunity to get the rest of the layout area up before proceeding with benchwork construction.

I can’t complain, a lot of folks down south and in the northeast lost everything they owned, I just had a few boxes get wet.

    Same here.

We were very fortunate. We are about 300yds from the river and only had a couple trickles of water into our cellar.

Lots of major flooding on both sides of the Schuylkill River, many road closures and trees down. The old canal bed which is usually almost dry was full. If that overflowed I would have had a real mess.

The BGE is ceramic smoker. Works pretty well and has great temperature control for VERY slow, low-temp cooked BBQ or searing at a very high-temp. There are certainly other brands. The method of cooking is taken from a pretty ancient technology (oriental based) of cooking meats in glazed pots, etc. I keep ours in the garage and just "wheel" it out next to the gas grill on the patio when I want to use it. They're also pretty versatile in that you can cook anything from pizza's to desserts on the dang things. There are also other brands out there that make the same thing. "Kamado Joe" is another brand of the same type smoker.

Looks like the chances of me painting the bricks colors is not happening. It’s so tiny I might attempt one, maybe. Wish they included a decal for that. Cause the kit looks awesome. Oh well, the pre-printed signs are amazing.

I’ll take those any day over the bricks. What if I painted the bricks all one grey color. Wouldn't they at least stand out? The grooves and such?
