There was equipment being used to do testing and training on the bypass route. Perhaps this?

Also, what has happened since fires closed the lines in northern California? How is Amtrak handling that emergency? Traffic from that is certainly much reduced?

This is one of the intermediate replacements for the retired Talgos, should be seeing the new ones soon.

Amtrak has cancelled 11/14 The Coast Starlight, until the line is open again, relying on the Amtrak Cascades trains for people movers. Don't know what they're doing for any passengers in California from the cancelled Coast Starlight?:cautious:

The 11/14 is still running, but it's now only a Los Angeles - Sacramento train for the time being.

That F-40 (?) with the garage door on the side looks like the units I saw in service between Milwaukee and Chicago in "Hiawatha Service" some years back. As with your Cascades, I think these were in push-pull service in WI/IL.

Probably a Cabbage. Amtrak converted some F-40s to Cab/Baggage for use with the Downeaster. Brunswick, ME can't turn an engine. So the Downeaster runs double-ended with an F-40 and a Cabbage.

New Englanders just does what needs to be done, doncha know. ;)

Yup, same with these out West. I think Amtrak only has one true F40PH still with the prime mover, I seen it here at King Street Station in Seattle with the 40th Anniversary train.

I'm sure they have a few at the Boston Engine Terminal for the Downeaster.
