The Purchasing Agent saved money by deleting the lead and trailing trucks .... This is an amazing exhibit as seen in the photo below. The PRR's Hudson River Tunnels were being bored when the magazine was published and the project, combined with the construction of Penn Station in New York City, would bring world recognition to the PRR's engineering prowess and financial power.

The second one from top may be Gladbrook, Iowa. Either C&NW or CGW RY, as both once passed through there.
What they didn't fully understand at the time when using compressed air in a working area were full effects of "Caisson Disease" (aka "the bends"), with nitrogen forming in the bloodstream when workers spent hours in near-sealed chambers excavating mud and rock. The same technique was used in setting bridge piers in riverbeds.
