    My can of paste flux is from Kester and it is so old there are no bar codes, part numbers or anything like that on it. The little can is about 1/2 gone at this point and it still works great. Every now and then I heat up the can a little to melt it all flat again. My dad gave it to me when I was a kid in the 80's learning how to solder, and he got it sometime in the late 60's early 70's. Sometimes old is simply the best.

    Them old soldering irons are the bomb!! They are also good for 'fixing' a brand! :rolleyes:

    We learned how to solder sheet metal with irons like that in shop class, 8th grade, in the sixties. It was just so we knew how to use one of those. Remember Sal-Met flux?

    Ok Putt's. :sneaky::whistle::rolleyes:

    I did start out using something like those soldering beasts. An electric wood burner. Member of the family was insulted by her nephew playing with trains. So they tried to divert my attention to something else. Odd but I found ways to use it in my "Playing with Trains". Sign making for the old west town. It was at a cost. I burned my fingers toooooo many times. I decided it was time to try out something similar to the large hand held-Weller you'll see in my picture. Only it was from Sears only because Ladd's Hardware was out of them. Go figure.

    Here is what I use today.

    Overall I prefer the smaller Radio Shack soldering iron. Cool enough for some applications yet hot enough to get the job done.

    So, there Mr. George. :confused::D:LOL::ROFLMAO:

    You're so far ahead of me. The thing is if I was doing all my soldering from a permanent location I would go for one of those "Soldering Stations," in a heart beat. I don't want to drag the whole thing around the layout. I don't like dragging these two. If I could find a battery powered one I could depend on. I might purchase it or move on it.

    Rumor has it you don't use a soldering iron. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

    I'm moving away from soldering all my under the layout wires. Suitcase connectors, wire nuts, will most likely be the future for under the table wiring. No hot solder in my lap. Limited time working overhead with something that can break away and into my face. Let alone burn the vinyl flooring. In the train shed it was an unfinished plywood floor. It didn't matter as I had plans for covering the walking traffic areas with carpet.

    How about them cookies?

    Maybe George just glues the wire to the rails.

    There is a liquid solder or there used to be. I never had any luck with it.

    If you really want to know what George does, visit his thread over at T.H.E.R.R. .

    Okay! A change of subject.

    I was just watching Mike Fifer's, You Tube Channel. He makes a presentation with regard to his Diesels and the problems he's had with them. All I can say is his discomfort with some of the Dieseasels (sp intended) is shared not only by myself but others in the hobby. I do like how he resolved most of his problems. There is a few where it just isn't going to happen. You'll see as you watch the video.

    A shout out of Thanks to Mike Fifer, for laying it out so straight forward. Well done. As usual.

    You have one in your picture on display at the train station. That has been nothing but a source of frustration for both of us AND many of us in the hobby. I don't think Bachmann ever really got it right. Sad to say.

    Mike does talk about some Life Like Mikado's. I've had the same good experience with them as he has. Also, Kato's Mikado's run sweet.

    I had high hopes for the new Athearn stuff. Again we share the same frustrations.

    Oh, well it is what it is.

    Update on Wireus Repairus I. Most of the wires are stripped. I need to get busy and strip the telephone wires for the automated Kato Unitrack Switches. No real rush as Priority is getting the tracks rewired to the right Block-toggle switch. Next up. Check and repair any track on the lower level. Then replace the top deck and go into track realignment and repair mode.

    I want to redo the arch bridge. The tracks are a bit to close on top. Other bridges will need repairs, as well.

    Should I live long enough I will get it scenic-ed. The fun part.

    I remember that stuff. My dad bought some and I don't think I ever got it to work. It seemed like it was mostly flux and boy, did it smell bad.
