All, What was your FIRST KITBASHED N-SCALE STEAM Locomotive, and all time Favorite now ? What Manuacturers were used during the KITBASH? Lastly , do you still have the Steam Locomotive? I would like to see photos. Tom
My first occurred over 30 years ago when I converted a 0-6-0 into a cab forward 2-6-0 and my next to last was building the Climax locomotives. RLW Class A Climax conversion to N from Nn3 by John Moore posted Oct 19, 2012 at 9:18 PM The first one is long gone and somewhere in the middle I created a 2-8-8-4 and a 2-6-8-0 and both of them are now gone.
I believe this was my first steam kitbash. In 1993, I needed a MoPac 10 wheeler to fit in with the location and time of the NTRAK modules that I was building. Not much was available back then but I found a Graham Farish 4-6-0 mechanism, an Atlas Rivarossi boiler shell and an Arnold Rapido tender for the project. I later upgraded it with Kato Mikado tender trucks for better electrical pickup. I have since kit bashed so many locomotives it is hard to pick one as my favorite. Possibly this one, although it is pretty much scratch built and not kit bashed. The locomotive cab is from a Bachmann 4-4-0.
Tom, Here is my very 1st bash job of an articulated steamer. I am an SP nut, from birth, as my father was a hoghead on the T&NO. I have always wanted an SP AC-9 and I passed on a KEY model several years ago. Here is what I started with: castings by "superturbine: Power by Bachmann EM-1, shaved down to fit boiler shell Result, quite a mess As additional info, I added an ESU Loksound Select Direct Micro decoder and 11x16 encased speaker in tender. I did this bashing back in 2014 and I still have and occasionally run it today. I also have a second set of parts to do another one. I have started on it but put on back burner while I do my SP GS-1. I am going to make another post regarding the in progress GS-1. Thanks for starting this thread.
You wanted photos so here goes. I will bore you and others with these, but........... My 2nd AC-9 project, same parts, new build................... That project is "on hold" while I complete the following. The power chassis is a Bachmann J class and the castings are again from "superturbine"........... I have pretty much tracked down parts I need to complete this bash. I have another B'mann EM-1 that at some point I am going to bash it into a non SP version of a cabforward. It will be converted in my home roads back shop (my workbench). That's all of my locomotive projects at least known projects at this time. My projects will probably out live me. Have fun and be well, Carl
My first steam kitbash was in 2006 or so, an attempt to make a PRR H-class 2-8-0 with an 80F81 tender. I used a Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0 mechanism, a Minitrix K4 boiler, a few bits and pieces from the Spectrum boiler, and some styrene sheet. It worked fairly well, applying the principle of "don't let perfect get in the way of good enough."
