We had mostly grey skies this week. I wasn't inspired. From 5 February, a nicely weathered covered hopper.

From August 1980, NJDOT GE U-34CH 4181 is at Port Jervis, NY, a location on the former Erie main. Conrail operated most NJ commuter trains at this date. In 1983 service on Conrail lines was transferred to New Jersey Transit. The big U-Boats were impressive in both size and sound.

Coldest week of the year so far. Temps in the -20s and wind chills down to -50. At that temperature, even diesels smoke like steamers!
So here ya go, a couple takes on Gassman in the extreme cold.

Westbound grain loads at -18 at sunset (windchill -41!):

And westbound Northgate Local at -19, windchills of -39.

Another 1225 shot from Durand Railroad Days in 1996, this time (obviously) from a cab tour. I thought this was a really moody cab shot with interesting light. IMAG0016 (3).JPG
A famous model railroader once said that every picture tells a story, don't it? The second shot, taken from the former dispatcher,s office (windows could definitely have stood washing) on the second floor of the Durand Union Station is one of those. It's definitely an interesting shot with the 1225 on display, the grain elevator visible above the stores reflecting Durand's rural character and the old concrete coaling tower attesting to Durand having been the heart of the GTW, one of the last class 1 railroads to operate steam power.
