Doubt Kato will do it with Rapido having already announced it, https://rapidotrains.com/products/n-scale/complete-trains/the-canadian
I guess disappointment for many which would like to get a very well done model of their signature named trains. Kato's approach to passenger consists is the best plan. I have 'chased' other manufacturer/importers piecemeal methods to several dead ends... Intermountain Railway Co in particular has left me high n' dry for several consists including the NCL, Mainstreeter, Rock Island/SP Golden State Rocket, Panama Limited... etc. Their passenger cars are far better detailed than Kato... but quite expensive too. Lowell Smith is following the IRC piecemeal routine as well and has me concerned too... though so far good for the Texas Special. It just takes too long and a glitch in the production schedule could take years to complete with cost escalations inevitable. Sent from my SM-J737T using Tapatalk
THIS. Fortunately, the CFO has granted me a dispensation in advance for the J. After all, she searched for and found the Con-Cor Powhatan set I had to sell in my younger, unemployed days some 20 years later. I got it as a surprise Christmas gift. Sent from my SM-N950U1 using Tapatalk
Hmmm... sounds like a really great CFO. That CFO wouldn't by some chance do double duty as a significant 'other'... like a spouse? Sent from my SM-J737T using Tapatalk
I have the same type of organization here. My CFO added the new TCL to my passenger fleet in December. I did not protest.
What configuration would this be in? After the 20th Century Limited, can Kato turn around and do back-to-back name train projects? They do have a lot of E unit tooling though. Did the Sunset Limited ever share any equipment with the Daylights? Kato also has the articulated cars and the GS-4, but I haven't seen a lot about them on the Sunset. From what I know, the Sunset is fluted with the red band above the windows. I'm trying to figure out how they would do this model, would they re-use tooling like the Continental set? I don't see Kato as one to crank out newly tooled models all the time.
From its introduction in the late 1940s until the 1960s, the light weight Sunset used a pretty dedicated set of Budd cars without much mixing with others save for occasional Pullman built 10-6s. Kato has announced more GS4s, both War Time black and prewar daylight with "SOUTHERN PACIFIC LINES" spelled out on the tender. The GS4s were known to pull the Sunset on rare occasions west of El Paso. The Sunset cars were somewhat different from any tooling Kato has done so far. The closest would be the Budd 10-6 sleepers but the Sunset cars had full length letter boards above the windows unlike the CB&Q 10-6s that they have done. In the last few years Kato seems to have no qualms about producing all new tooling if that is what it takes. There are a few exceptions like the low level C&NW 400 and the Silver Streak Zephyr. I am not holding my breath on this rumor but KATO knows SP sells well. The GS4 is one of their most popular locomotives.
I sold my 30 year old HO collection in 1978 containing 1940/50's Varney, Mantua, Penn Line, and Bowser locos and cars in 1978. Don't remember why, but one of my dumber decisions. CFO, best friend, and a fantastic sailboat handler, gave me an Atlas Rock Island N-Scale box car for my birthday in 1981. Still have it, haven't looked back since.
Okay, the Sunset rumor may be quashed. It seems someone may have confused the Sunset with the Daylight. Kato has hinted that they will have another release of the Daylight cars to go with the announced GS4s.
I am rummaging through my collection and came across my long-forgotten Kato Corrugated CP Budd Cars and two E8/9 Locos. Put them on the track and they ran fine, albeit a little slow. 3rd release from 2000, complete with decoders. I think I'll keep these. While Rapidos are nice this is more my speed and liking!
Question is the Kato SP Daylight 18 Car set with SP GS4 and 2 SP PA-1 and an SP PB-1 worth hanging on to? Bought back in Mid 2000's. The reason I ask is damn trains are getting really expensive nowadays!
That makes a LOT more sense. I'm not suggesting that they wouldn't decide to release a Sunset limited at some point, it's just that it's typically a much longer timeframe from announcement to release. Also, Kato likely knows that there will be a mutiny (at least a transparent threat of one) if the NCL isn't the next all new name train release.
It's crazy how much people talk about the NCL. I'm not even an N scaler and I'm invested. I just think its fun that everyone subconsciously wants to see it released. The fact that no one ever pays attention to the Northern Pacific is kind of funny. It is always slightly edged out in favor of a different release.
I suppose I never paid much attention to the Northern Pacific because I did not have any personal connection to it. I traveled on both the the Great Northern and the Milwaukee Road so when it came to the northern trans-con routes, those were the ones that interested me. However, if Kato releases the NCL, I will likely get in line to buy it. The paint scheme has grown on me.
That Raymond Loewy paint scheme is pure art. Why KATO has failed to honor this is beyond me. Maybe they’re saving the best for last. I hope I live that long.
Agreed! I have 2 different sets of Daylight passenger sets, a couple of Kato Daylight GS4 with different tender lettering, a ConCor Daylight GS4, a bunch of Kato Daylight PA/B sets, a couple sets of BLI Daylight PA/B and E8A/B. Why would I even consider another set of Daylight passenger cars or more motive power??? When purchased over 10 years ago... the Daylight set and extra articulated coaches were much cheaper than current pricing will be. This will be good for noobs who missed on the first two runs... but not as likely to move the needle on those who already have prior releases. Sent from my SM-J737T using Tapatalk
Yeah.... that 'I hope I live that long' is my current concern. I would hate to find out the NCL will be released when I am on death's doorstep due to Covid19 and variants running wild... that seems possible. Sent from my SM-J737T using Tapatalk
Yea, that's exactly why I asked. No reason for another one, if the current one is not broke. All my stuff is DCC and unless I really want sound, I'll hold off for something else.
