N scale forum has a new posting on a cool idea for wall shelving... This idea would work even better for Z. Taking cheap metal studs ...and cutting each of them lengthwise you get 2 shelves eight foot long and 1 1/2 inch wide (with a lip that keeps jewel boxes from slipping off) Who’s monitoring the N scale forums for cool ideas?
Sorry but that Sounds like a Accident waiting to happen. I work around those metal studs often enough to tell you first hand that when cut they can have some seriously sharp edges. They may be cheap But their is nothing cheap about hospital bills for stiches. Been there, Done that, No Thank You I will pass.
Yeah, I can see the possible stitches from not being careful. Probably use the black piping you use on car doors for protection against door dings, that would cover the edges nicely, and give it a professional look as well.
Not to mention, how to make/keep the top surface flat (without crown) front-to-back and level (like no wavy left-to-right. The sharp edges can be managed but kerf-cuts in the longitude wall, the use a wood/plastic tool moved from the starting end to the other. Funny this should come up. The Misses is N and and has come 'collectables', like the Kato 'Twilight Zone' Mizukaze and other passengers while I have Z too. Was just thinking, we should show them off but . . . how to keep dustless, have lighting (environment and interiors) too. Sure, I can buy some veneer plywood or clear hardwoods, cut kerfs on each shelf, place acrylic sliding 'windows' on each (don't forget the divot/finger hole) and some lighting but that means work
I’m thinking mount them like siding. One attached to the next. That would remedy all but the final top edging... Grinding and lots of sanding might work the sharp edges!
