Has anyone upgraded this decoder with a better speaker? The sound is horrible! Better Speaker or File? I run Lok Sound and I almost thinking of chucking this Digitrax decoder! Anyone have experience with these Digitrax Sound Decoders?
If you have LokSound and are used to it, the best thing is to rip this decoder out and replace. The ESU decoders are light years better.
I agree with Rick completely, however a speaker with a proper enclosure still might go a long way. I have one Digitrax sound decoder (SDXN146K1E) installed in a Kato SD70M and the loco sounded pretty weak before I installed a new 9x16 speaker with my own scratch-built enclosure. It sounds way better now. Nowhere near ESU level sound quality but much better than before.
Thanks for all the info, very disappointed with digitrax... I run all Loksound and they are absolutely Great! I am going to see if a speaker and new file may change the sound to a bit better quality on this digitrax sound decoder! Thanks again for all the help... Remember, these Digitrax sound decoders have been out for a while now (years) and haven't been updated. I believe back then sugar cube speakers were a fantasy as well as downloadable sound, etc. To compare Loksound to that is valid only to show how far technology has advanced.
Digitrax uses 8 bit sound, while pretty much every other brand uses 16 bit sound. Obviously you can hear the difference. I have one Digitrax sound decoder and will never go back. There is the age-old Tsunami/ESU war, but either of those brands will be much better. These is only so much a speaker can do, especially if the recording and file being played is not good.
