On RRPictureArchives, it says 8798 was wrecked in 2018, and the last photo on the site show it with the standard cab.

Ok, just wondering if any were still out there. I figured they were all rebuilt at this point.

I hope BNSF takes a cue from NS and resumes rebuilding the Dash 9s into AC units. But this time update the interiors. There's a small batch of 600s that got rebuilt a few years ago but nothing since.

Weird thing is, look at the trucks on the 8798-did those standard cabs ever come with those trucks back then? I thought they came with the rigid, non-steerable type?!

Those two extra traction motors aren't really necessary, Tom. The only time you should ever need them is:
    • If you're going uphill
    • If you're going downhill
    • If it's raining
    • If it's snowing
    • If there's precipitation in the forecast
    • If it's dry
    • If it's cold
    • If it's hot
    • If you're on a unit train
    • If you're on a conventional manifest
    • If you're on a DP manifest
    • If you're over tonnage
    • If you're under tonnage
    • If you're using Trip Optimizer
    • If the toilet stinks
    • If the sidewall heater is stuck on high
    • If the conductor's handset doesn't work
    • If the only wiper that doesn't work is on the engineer's side
    • If the seat is broken

The Dash 9-40C (or C40-9 depending on how you say it) had the Hi-Ad trucks like the rest of the Dash 9 series. You are probably thinking of the older Dash 8s with the other truck design. I don't think they are Adirondack trucks, what would you call those? The Dash 8s and 9s look pretty similar, the trucks are the simplest spotting feature. NS was the only customer for the spartan cab, and I think they only had one order of them. The rest were C40-9W with the now-standard widecab, a downrated version of the regular C44-9W

    Aaah, makes sense. (y)

I was thinking of the older Dash-8's.

As seen at Barrington, IL in the mid-1970s, a Pacific Great Eastern boxcar, built 10-1971 with both a plug door and sliding door for lumber loading I'm guessing. The PGE became BC Rail, later a component of CN.

During a Veteran's Day chase of eastbound CP train 498, I panned CP 7010 as it stormed through Foxholm, ND; CP Portal Sub.

Chicago-bound C&NW scoot at Barrington, IL, about 1976. I think the rotating orange lights atop the C&NW's passenger equipment is cool. I can't recall if freight units were so equipped.

I used to love the rotating beacons on BN's locos-you could always see a train at night!
