My last layout was all 16 gauge stranded wire from Amazon. I think I ultimately bought five 100' rolls of the stuff. Connections were all mechanical. Crimp contact molex connectors. Suitcase splices for feeders from the main buss. Terminal strips with crimp on connectors for final distributions. This was a modular shelf layout (my second and last) with Unitrack. I even figured out how to salvage the Kato male connectors to the powerpacks and to upgrade them to 16 gauge instead of that tiny (22 gauge?) wire that Kato uses. That type of wiring becomes fun. It is also highly reliable and I don't think I had a drop of solder in the whole layout.
