I have removed the "SP's Newberg Branch" from the property. [IMG] It was weird tearing it apart. It took me 2-3 years to build, hundreds (thousands?) of hours... I saved buildings, trees etc, whatever I could. We now have a craft-room/computer room, and an eye level shelf layout is planned. [IMG]

Please visit the link below for a last visit to my old layout, Thanks [IMG]

Well its a shame to see such a great layout dismantled but I look forward to seeing your new layout as you progress.

Do you have a plan of the proposed layout?

Yeah, it always amazes me to find how quickly something that took forever to build, can be dismantled in such a short time

But during any dismantling I always think of the better layout just around the corner [IMG]

It is always sad when a layout is laid to rest  , but with every new layout comes big improvements! You also get to try some of the new techniques we have heard about here lately.

    Some things to mull over:

Staggered rail joints to reduce derailments.
    Smaller code rail.
    Larger radius switches.
DCC, Block Occupancy Detection, Computer Control.
New Wodland Scenics and Scenic Express landscaping products.
Removable Bridge Module vs. Duckunder vs. Point to Point layout.
    Modules vs. Permanent Benchwork.

I have torn down 4 permanent layouts in the last 30 years, then I switched to modular layouts. Even with my current modular layout, I am on my third configuration with 2 inside corner modules no longer being used, but awaiting resurrection.

I have thought of building a shelf layout someday, and if I do, it will be a modular shelf layout with skyboard attached (I'll hang my modules on the wall [IMG] ), and use a removable bridge module by the door.

Whatever your choices, it is going to be fun!

Espee2, I know just how you feel, I did that not long ago to my old Badger Creek, now the new one is getting a face lift. It's a never ending story with a railroad. Look forward to seeing photo's of the new one.

    Ouch!

You are obviously talented in model layout building so I am sure you next one will be even better as you incorporate lessons learned from the past.

    Good luck!

What happened to the hobby shop in Grant's Pass? Is it still there? Wasn't that the home of the Rogue Valley Model RR Club? I used to stop at there on my various trips between the Bay Area and Salem or Seattle. Too much smoke the last time through late this summer, but we did eat at Porter's in Medford (Old SP depot)

My condolences on the passing of your good friend, the old layout.

I have also recently dismantled a three year old, nearly completed layout. But mine was removed to build a better version, fixing some errors of the last one, such as:
    too small minimum radius
    too steep of grades
poor track laying on grades and tight curves
too wide of benchwork, making track unreachable.

Good luck on the new layout.

I'm not sure about the one in Grants Pass, I am closer to Medford. The RVMRC is at the Railroad Park in Medford.

I too had tight curves, and this one stubborn turnout on a curve that derailed almost all my Life Like models. And forget trying to run the new Kato Alco PA's. I saved the Caboose hand throws, That was my favorite part of running trains. I painted the throws white on the handle top as seen for mainline (run through) and red for side track very easy to glance and see how they're set.

It's always a bit of a down day when the old layout is gone. But that usually fades quite fast ,with the anticipation of the new one as it begins to take shape!

    This is a great idea!!!!

Thanks for sharing it. I too use Caboose Industries Ground Throws for all my turnouts.

I concur about painting the hand throws, what a great idea.
