For those interested tomorrow August 12 Amtrak 6 and Amtrak 1105 the California Zephyr will be rerouting through Wyoming between Denver and Salt Lake City due to a wild fire along I-70 in the Glenwood Canyon.

That would be an interesting ride / diversion. Parley's Canyon would be interesting in a train. (The canyon that leads out of SLC up to WY with I-80 and the UP tracks).

That would be Weber Canyon. Parleys would be too steep. The route is north along the wasatch front to Ogden then east from there up Weber Canyon to Echo where it climbs to Wahsatch summit just outside of Evanston.

Thanks. I guess I just assumed they went that way since I did :) But come to think of it I've only ever seen the UP freight trains further up I-80 on the way to Evanston. And of course there are no tracks where it comes out into the valley anyway. Thanks for pointing out my mistake.

"Hamtrak" in Wyoming. Now you know why I want to reinstate the CB&Q.

There were tracks at one time that went from Coalville to Park City. The UP served an old silver mine. Today the tracks are gone and it is now a trail run by the state parks dept. Even longer ago the Rio Grande had tracks that went up Parleys to Park city. There were at least two switch backs because it was so steep.
