In 1936, the Anderson High School Coral Club met at the NYC Depot for a trip East (And this is the last of the Depot pix)
Was the tower that tall so a gate operator could see a train approaching and climb down to lower the gates before the train whistled?
I think that was the deal, though electrically activated gates might have been in use by then, as was the case of this crossing gate tower I shot in May 1981 in Newark, NJ.
I think you're right. I took the shot while driving to or from Newark Airport and I can't recall where the crossing tower was.
You seem to have a lot of historic NYC photographs. I particularly enjoyed the ones from Wilkerson and Richmond. I worked for White Petroleum in Shirley, just a few miles away, for 10 years. Also I traveled from Richmond to Terre Haute when I was very young in the mid-50s. Richmond station is now a real estate office. I grew up in Connersville and I would like to model the NYC freight station. Do you have any pictures?
Thank you very much. As I remember it, the station had 3 sections. The office was facing the street with an open-air loading section where the boxcar is located and then an enclosed freight storage area, all under one roof. Unfortunately, it was demolished long before I was old enough to be interested in railroading. I never saw the steam engine only a Baldwin diesel switcher. The Whitewater Valley Railroad has a station in this general area now.
Roger, what was the population of Anderson then? That is a big crowd, but then that was back when people actually travelled by train.
