    Hi,

I was wondering if Southern Pacific ever painted a set of Alcos in Black Widow colors? I really want to get a set painted that way, but not if it is going to be totally wrong. It is acceptable if they only had it for a very short time.

A picture would be great, I have not been able to find one thus far in my searches.

    Thanks!

I do not believe they ever were painted in Black Widow. There was a short lived "Halloween" scheme that was similar. However, Con Cor painted some up for us. :)

Agreed. Per Richard Percy's "My Espee Modelers Home Page," no evidence of ever having been a Black Widow PA. But, I agree with Russell, don't let that stop you. There should have been one, you know?

Yep, they got three different paint jobs but none of them was the Black Widow. They were: Daylight, Halloween, and Bloody Nose. Although I agree, they should have so go ahead.

This is how I remember them (that is with what memory I have left...grin) : http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=305846
    My favorite paint scheme: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=275331

You can do your own search: https://search.yahoo.com/search;_yl...+Pacific+Locomotive+Images&fr=sfp&fr2=&iscqry=

    I hope that helps.

As has been said NONE of Espee's Alco PA's were painted in "Black Widow paint" Some had a "Holloween"paint for a while but eventually ALL got the Red & Grey "Bloody Nose" paint.
Espee did paint two EMD E-9's in "Black Widow" while experemetning with new paint schemes in 1958.
Passenger power was the first to get the Red & Grey paint.

    Thanks Everyone,

All my SP modeling is prior to the grey and red nose scheme. Well I have an ABB set of unpainted Alco's, I guess I will go ahead and paint up the set in Black Widow. I have both E9's on Black Widow as well as all my F units are Black Widow, What isn't Black Widow is either Tiger Stripe of Daylight scheme. It would have been that way if I was the President of Southern Pacific. So into the paint booth these will go!

These are only some of my Black Widow Southern Pacific engines in their Con-Cor storage box. I do have a Pa-1 in Black Widow scheme. These are part of Willamette Regional Railway engines. My CabFoward AC-11 will never see Black Widow paint, although I have thought of converting some Amtrak engines to Black Widow. 2014-06-08_19-12-08_239.jpg 2014-05-31_18-59-25_982.jpg 2014-06-03_16-30-24_194.jpg

SP did not have PA's in Black Widow, and only 2 numbers in E units.

E9A's 6048 and 6050 received full Black Widow paint in 1958, but only wore it for a short time.

Glad to see someone painting those SP PAs in the Black Widow scheme. I think it's quite a stunning paint scheme.

Whilst I never have modeled the SP, my Dad took me to the local hobby shop back in the early 80s when the N scale Con-Cor PAs were released. He gave me my choice of paint schemes to pick out for a PA and a PB. It came down to SP Black Widow and Great Northern Empire Builder schemes. I KNOW, I KNOW, these were not prototypical. But it was my layout, and hey, Dad was buying. So...Great Northern it was. I still have those 2 locomotives today, though I have not run them in years.

    I like SouthPawGandyDancer's RR Modeler's Rule #1 above.

Good luck with the paint project!

& yes, Richard Percy's site is the best free resource around. Annual NMRA membership includes free membership @ CSRM.org's Archive & Library, + SPHTS. org is also worth a membership, esp. since theJthe author of so many SP Locomotive Annual (report)s, Joseph Strapac is their most recent Archivist;)!
