Removed and painted the fascia black today--looks so much better!

Also got a couple new boxcars in the mail this week. These are Trainworx reworked Fox Valley 5283 DD Boxes. The waffle peieces are individually installed.

Been a while since I posted photos here... Long story short, the SPS is in its new home in North Dakota.

Love the multiple seasons! No boring same old-same old there. Have wanted to do some winter......so what is the snow? And how do you keep it clean?

OK, I got excited....asked a silly question and then went back and reviewed the thread and found the answer. Duh.

    Thanks Hemi! It looks great!

Moving a layout has got to be one of the most daunting parts of relocating. I'd like to know more about how that all worked out.
Glad to know the SPS lives on!

As you can see, I built a custom crate for shipment. I built the basic layout in 2009, shipped it to Germany, and 5 years later, shipped it to North Dakota in the same crate. It was well protected and secured.

Here's hoping the layout continues to survive well. Do you get your own shipping container as well, for all household goods?

In a way, yes. The movers box everything up, and load it in large crates. At least overseas to CONUS.

I was just wondering the other day when you were due state side again, welcome back. Glad to see the layout made it okay. Now to entice you to come to Galesburg at least once before I move.

OK, so I'm diggin' up bones--my layout has been under wraps (literally encased in a tarp to keep dust off) for 3 years since I moved into my new home. 9 straight years of undergrad work finally finished with my bachelors degree in December 2019, so I have time to model again as well. The cat litterboxes are in the same room, so the dust was a big problem, and kept me from playing with trains! This weekend, I built a partition wall with a door to permanently separate the layout from the cat box dust (and keep the cats out). One of my cats liked to pick trees off the layout and carry them throughout the house...:censored:
I need to mud in and sand the sheetrock next, but when that and paint is done, I'll uncover the layout and be able to do modeling again.

Until that time, here's the current home of the SPS:

Congrats on finishing up your bachelors degree! It's great to see this tread again and see your layout again. It has always been one of my favorites!.

    Thanks!

I have a lot of details to work on here. I need more trees on the ridges, more snowy trees installed, need to build searchlight signals, install crosing details, etc. I have a shapeways signal shack for east and west Crescent, decals to match, and need to finish that project and plant them. Still need to decide if I'll put a house overlooking east Crescent, similar to the real site.

On the side, I have a number of projects in various states of work and research.
Coal trains are the lifeblood of the Moffat, and I have 6 signature trains I have built, am building or planning. Models for some are not available in N scale, so Shapeways has one, and 2 more don't exist, but a reasonable foobie for one might be kitbashable. Most are Athearn Hi-side gons, and FVM/Red Caboose/Precision Masters Ortner 5-bay hoppers in not less than 8 schemes.

I also have derrick 028 "Samson de Grande", business car Wilson McCarthy, a few Geeps in the modification stages or paint shop, and a postwar Prospector behind FTs with heavyweights in planning. Although the layout is small, I have a ton of projects on which to stay busy.

Why'd you pick that name..? Nearly twenty years ago I christened my 'virtual layout' with a fictional 'Division' of the rr for the mid-50's basis of a maybe one day operation...

The name of the layout or the name of the Derrick 028?

The Derrick was named by railroaders during the Rio Grande days. I think they held a naming contest for the 250 ton derrick.

The layout name is a nod to Richard Farewell and his book called Rio Grande Secret Places, volume 1, the Tunnel District. His book inspired the layout, and my exploration of the prototype.

025, the 250 ton derrick still in Grand Junction, was indeed nicknamed Sampson de Grande.
