I would like to paint my Key UP Challenger with the two-tone grey scheme. I am having trouble deciding on a brand and also finding the colors I need. Any suggestions? thanks, carl
See this info: https://utahrails.net/up/ttg.php You would need three shades of gray: Light Gray, Dark Gray, and Striping Gray. According to the info in the above link, Light Gray is essentially indistinguishable from UP Harbor Mist Gray. Scalecoat has paint in both UP Harbor Mist Gray and UP Dark Gray colors. Striping Gray is a pale off-white shade of gray. Scalecoat makes several light gray colors, one of which ought to be suitable. http://www.minutemanscalemodels.com/v/vspfiles/Colorchart/ScalecoatColorChart.pdf
Well here it is, waiting to add chassis to boiler and tender. Even after several suggested that I should use Scalecoat, I went with Tru-Color. I used UP Harbor mist that I lightened up a tad, black, and SP dark Lark grey. For the firebox and smokebox I used some Floquil that I had on hand. I like the results but I can see some places where well placed weathering will be necessary........................ Everything was airbrushed except the firebox and smokebox and smokebox door which were brushed Those decals were the toughest that I have ever applied. Thanks for looking and stay well and be careful over the Memorial Day frivolities, Carl
I'm not a UP expert by any stretch, but those colors look spot on to me. That's going to be one awesome looking locomotive running around your pike when she's done!
I am a little late, but the smokebox and firebox would best be painted with Scalecoat Graphite and Oil. Rick Jesionowski
Here she is completed, finally............................ Need to put Neolube on the rods and drivers and tweak the tender tracking skills. Stay well, Carl
Great work! I have been thinking about adding Neolube to the rods and drivers on my own N scale steam locomotives. Keep sharing the pics!
Hemi, Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it. I am a family oriented SP guy as my Dad and brother were both SPer's, so I don't have much UP stuff. Heck I don't even have a caboose but I now have their big steamers, 4014, 3982, 844. I have the excursion set for my FEF and that's probably what it is going to pull. Maybe a reefer block as well. I have speed matched it to the FEF and Big Boy so I may tray some double heading. When our area gets back to normal and I can get to the club layout I will attempt some videos. I am getting anxious to play. Carl PS: I am in the process of changing decoders for more room in the tender so that I can get the orange plug out of sight.
Here is a quick video that shows the "fixed" tender wiring and also the tweaked sounds. Now, on to my GS-1 project ! !
Just beautiful Carl! I love that paint scheme. I bet it will look great double heading on your clubs layout.
