missing that little plastic piece that clicks in but so far it looks like it will stay in place.

If I ever lose such a clip or it fails *cough* Kato E & F units *cough* I've always had success pulling some kapton tape nice and tight from one side of the frame to the other (over the decoder). Perhaps give that a go if you have any issues (y)

I meen the second hole. the board is made to go down then slide back and lock in to a plastic clip that come's up thru the hole that is molded on that motor mount

This is exactly what ill be doing.

it slide in and clicks into place but i dont have that little piece that clicks into the hole between the motor lead solder points to sit over the motor leads. So far so good anyways. TrinityJay's usage of tape over the board will work for me.

I had bought a couple P42s from fleabay, they were marked as never run. When I got them they were run... and they wouldn’t run on my layout very well. At full DC throttle they just creeped along and struggled to pull even 1 car. So I took them apart and found that they had run on carpet and there was lint and carpet fibers wound up in the gearboxes and even between the motor frame and flywheels. This had burnt up the motors. I was able to order new motors from Kato and after a bit of cleaning these both run great. The seller ended up refunding me the amount to cover the purchase of the new motors.

So the reason I posted that was if your motors don’t seem to have the needed power or something isn’t right with them it’s pretty easy to order and remoter these. And the reason I would say they may not run right is the buggered soldering job could have overheated the brushes and springs.

Thanks for the tip. Seems to be running well. This p42 is pulling a full Coast Starlight consist (10 cars) just fine at all speeds. Lights work, starts up and slows down smoothly. Nothing that would stand out to me as not functioning right. Im a big proponent of ebay, i dont ever call it fleebay haha. I love it as a buyer. As a seller you are more likely to get screwed though. Been there.

I wish I could get another one of these for MU and make it a real Coast Starlight but these days these kato p42s are is just too expensive considering i got this hack job dcc version for $65. Have a delPrado dummy p42 that im planning to use instead but after i swap out the trucks, wheels, couplers....which opens another question, where can i get kato replacement p42 trucks that i can graft onto the delprado? Hoping Kato sells them.

Kato does indeed sell them, I have ordered them in the past for replacement of damaged gears. I like eBay as a buyer as well and will no longer sell there. Been screwed over too many times as a seller and I’m an honest person. I didn’t much like selling a MacBook Pro and the buyer said it was DOA. I lost the case and had to refund him when I received the computer back. I got back a white plastic housed MacBook. I refilled the claim against the seller and eventually got my money back for the original sale. The buyer got banned, but it took over 6 months to get fixed. Selling video games and trains didn’t go much better.

Lego is the only thing I have not had much trouble with. Except one woman who bought a train from me and put in a claim that it was broken. Said she received a bag of plastic pieces, not the train she ordered. After a phone call she discovered that Lego is a building toy and during the call she gave the pieces to her grandson who knew exactly what it was and got really excited about it! She dropped the claim.

now thats a story! sorry you had to go through those. I have my own 2 seller stories too.

    1. buyer buys an airplane model off of me and claims it does not have winglets. I specifically typed in BOLD in the subtitle description and body description that plane DOES NOT have winglets. I lost the case.

    2. buyer buys a camera off of me (will never sell anything high value like a camera or apple product on ebay ever again), i ship it, the shipment gets redirected midway to another shipping company that exports things internationally. Buyer never got his item. Imagine that. Paypal sided with me saying i had shipped to the right address and that was the extent of my responsibilities. Imagine that...someone put an address redirect on someone else who was completely oblivious.

I will say first that it is easy to solder wires onto the brush caps without the slightest damage, but I also have to share starting in the 5rh grad or so, my father taught me how to solder, and over my 30 years of experience in radio and television, I have honed my soldering skills.

That said, judging from the ham-handed soldering on the decoder board, I can' t believe that the soldering on the brush caps is any better.

I have been doing RC cars and boats, electronics, radio (k1mdr), and evening was an “I” level tech for the Navy repairing the F14D and E2C radar assemblies. I started with the RC stuff at 10 and my dad also taught me how to solder. So in my 35 years I can’t say I never messed anything up but I can sat it has been a very long time since I have.
