Here are some pics of my scratchbuilt model of the USS Lang, FF-1060. There are many more in my Railimages album. I'll be adding pics of my latest ship under construction soon. It's the 600' helicopter assault ship USS Okinawa. Thanks again Pete for getting me into something I just can't seem to stop doing
I can't speak for the lump in my throat!! Really nice model and great attention to detail. Ribbons, markings, etc. I am just amazed. Far surpasses the three foot rule!
THat is just incredible. Hard to believe that is scratch built and not a kit. Between you and Pete with these sea ports.... Maybe Arizona can access the sea via the Colorado river, or a post California earthquake sea port in Yuma????
What an excellent model it adds a totally new dimension to model railroading although Pete Nolan has been doing for quite a while. Excellent work
Bill, If I've inspired efforts like these, I feel like I've given a little bit back to the hobby. That's just a great ship. To encourage others, let me add that shipbuilding in N scale isn't that hard. The scale (1:160) is actually pretty big for model ships. A cutter, a destroyer, a modern frigate, even a Liberty-class ship aren't that big, although I don't think I'd try a modern aircraft carrier. Many details, such as masts, bollards, gun barrels, and "doors" are easily built from standard components. Great, great ship! Work is again interferring with my modeling, and I haven't made a choice for the next model. [Edit]: My "h" key is sticking [ July 19, 2005, 05:32 PM: Message edited by: Pete Nolan ]
Pete I totally agree. The ships are very easy to build. I break everything down into basic shapes and go from there. There is nothing like seeing scale ships towering over trains in the right proportions. I'm deffinately looking forward to seeing that tanker when you build it. It will be something to see for sure with all that piping on deck. The helicopter assualt carrier I'm working on now is 46" long by 6.35" wide on the flight deck not counting catwalks. It's very bulky to move around to say the least. I don't think I want to build another carrier, but I deffinately want to build a cruiser of two. God do I need a bigger train room!
He-he-he--can't stop, can you, Bill? That's about the size of the fleet tanker I have in mind. I may do the hull in styrene. I have good cross-sections. Yeah, the main deck is a real jumble of pipes, valves, etc.
