One of my guilty pleasures is that even though I model an Arkansas short line forest products railroad, I really like passenger trains. And I really like some Warbonnets. So much so that I have incorporated room in my staging for some of my favorite passenger trains so that I can let them run and just sit back and railfan. Or just let them run when I am working on something else in the train room.

This weekend I have been working on/with a couple of passenger trains that I have been gathering up cars to be representative of.

While all of these are not exactly the cars that ran in these trains, they are fairly representative and most folks, even model railroaders, wouldn’t know if I didn’t tell them. A die hard Santa Fe fan might know. I have tried to get “almost close” as I could.

The first is ATSF 93/94, the West Texas Express (93) and the Eastern Express (94). This was one of the “Pike Size Passenger Trains” in Andy Sperandeo’s Model Railroader article.

    Here we have Life-Like E8 #7827 ATSF E8m 80L, Walthers 932-55092 PS 72’ Baggage Car, Walthers 932-55062 PS 64 Seat Coach, and Walthers 932-55032 PS Plan 4140 10-6 Sleeper.

The second is ATSF 15/16, “The Texas Chief”, circa 1963.

While the first call power was a set of F units, E units would sometimes be assigned. I like me some E Units and this gives me a chance to run some.

For the power on my representation of the Texas Chief, we have a Kato 176-5304 E8/9 ATSF E8m 86L and a Kato 176-290 Undecorated E8B. The plan is to paint and decal the B Unit if I don’t stumble across a decorated shell that I could use.

For the Headend Car Section we have a Kato 106-1603-A Baggage Express, an Arnold Rapido 0358 S RPO, a Kato 106-1502-B RPO, and a Con-Cor #0001-41326 Baggage Car. The Arnold Rapido car needs some redecaling, lowering, and detail work done.

For the Coach Section we have a Con-Cor # 0001-429101 Chair Car, two Con-Cor #0001-420101 Coaches, and two Con-Cor Coaches from the Con-Cor # 0003_5400011 Santa Fe Set # 2.

For the Dining and Lounge Section we have a Con-Cor # 0001-041451 Dining Car, a Kato Super Chief Dormitory Lounge, and a Kato Super Chief Dining Car. None of these are exactly correct, but they are what I have.

For the Sleeper Section we have a Kato Super Chief Palm 10-6 Sleeper, a Kato Transcontinental Regal 4-4-2 Sleeper, another Kato Super Chief Palm Sleeper, and a Walthers 932–55032 PS Plan 4140 10-6 Sleeper masquerading as a PS Plan 4145 10-3-2 Blue Series Sleeper.

I still have some work to do to get this representation of the 1963 Texas Chief ready, but I am getting there. I may swap out a car or two along the way and I will probably add another B unit, but this is “almost close” to what the Texas Chief may have looked like way back when.

My latest SD40T-2 for the QA&P, this makes 4 tunnel units for the "Q" so far. I got a bit of weathering done and the QA&P 747 now enters service, we don't need no techno-toasters here, just good old EMD power.
