All - my main interest is passenger trains - streamliner era and Amtrak. I've spent a good bit of my life in Germany with the military and speak rather good German. I was in Germany earlier this month as well as last month. I had a bit of model railroad fun both times.

I wrote a blog post on a formerly secret N scale model of an uncompressed version of the station in the city I lived in twice. Scratch built with 500 surrounding buildings also scratch built. If you'll indulge me a moment to share the post with photo album and a 30-second video.

The N Scale material is from December. During this month's trip I stumbled across a model railroad club having an open house. I couldn't resist! The video is just three minutes. (I had a bit of fun with this one. The acoustics in the space were awful, so I added sound effects to cover the noise.)

PS - I don't normally travel to Europe that often, but I had promised my wife Christmas markets and wonderful German friends I've known since I was 16 turned 80 this month. I couldn't miss their party. They were the stability in my life when my parents divorced. I learned much of my German through them and it's no exaggeration to say I'm the person I am today because of them. We stayed in touch long before the Internet came along. A five-day trip was a bit crazy, but the flight back was my 54th trip across the Atlantic.

Was in Germany from 81-89, Frankfurt region and Kaiserslautern. I can appreciate and relate - those Christmas markets! And the trains - I got into 3D modelling just so I could reproduce the subways I rode in Frankfurt. (I've yet to get them powered) Thanks for sharing this.

Pretty unbelievable. How do they get into the center to work on a layout of that size?

Those Germans! Glad to see that the secret railroad was saved and now on display. Of course I HAVE to mention the 'other' great Geman layout, even if it IS in HO: Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg (billed worlds largest and includes a working airport with "flying" planes...google it for videos).

Now I have a second reason to some day visit Germany...two great layouts!

Jeff - Miniatur Wunderland is pretty amazing. It's so popular you have to book a time.

Some of it is a bit over the top cool gadgety stuff, but for the most part it's room after room of amazing work. Much of it is scratch built. We worth a stop if you're in the area. I made a day trip to Hamburg just to visit.

The scratch built buildings are truly amazing. The trackage to scenery is ove the top.

Very cool! I haven't been in Stuttgart since Volkfest 2013, but it was a good time. Spent 5 years at Ramstein. Miss what I knew, enjoyed Germany big time. Spent some time on your blog, brought back memories. Esso stations, autobahns, BMW repairs, Christmas markets....
