3 empty plastic containers...with push up bottoms that had 'muscle cream' ...and some plastic sprues for piping..made 3 nice oil storage tanks ...with floating roofs !!
Thank you Wolf I read this somewhere years ago.... "Vision without a task is only a dream. A task without a vision is but drudgery. But vision with a task is a dream fulfilled." – Anonymous .
We'll have to call you McGyver of the MRR world! "Watch me build a mountain, with tunnel, with this piece of gum!"
Here are some shots from my National Carbon scene. The buildings were fabricated by Al Skinner in Bellingham, WA, who sent them to me for painting/assembly. Overall scene: Some of the individual buildings: John C.
Over time, I've replace just about every structure on the layout with scratchbuilds of the actual structures in Flagstaff and Winslow AZ as they were in 1972-3. Of all the stuff I've built, one of my favorites is the La Posada Harvey House at Winslow - which was only done when the current owner Alan Afeldt supplied me with blueprint copies: But the real kicker that I thought I'd never live long enough to finish is doing all of Santa Fe Ave. in Flagstaff entirely in scratchbuilt buildings, including the Commercial Hotel that burned in 1975, and the still-very-much-alive Monte Vista on the backdrop. The depot was one of my first - did it way back in 1975 and it made RMC. But some of the filler buildings along the street are much newer. Every one was made from photos and dimensioning from Streetview and Google Maps.
Wow randgust, that is extraordinary workmanship. The research must be as much fun as the model building.
Very nice work. One of Dottie's sons just moved to Denver, but he worked for a number of years just across the tracks from the station at the Lumberyard Brewery in Flagstaff. We go by there a number of times each year going from our home in Utah to Phoenix. Really like what you have accomplished, Sumner

Randgust, Always love your Flagstaff Depot build. Everytime I see it...it reminds me of all the times when we go to Flag that we grab lunch at one of the many fast food places and go sit on the bench in the center of this pic... https://architecturestyles.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/copy-of-img_4801.jpg ...eat lunch....and just railfan for a few hours *sigh*
Last time I went through Winslow there was an old flatboard Ford sitting there with a mannequin of women sitting in it. How funny and appropriate. All of these scratch built structures are jaw dropping.
Here's a few of mine. Outer Limits tavern by mrhedley posted Nov 30, 2019 at 7:47 PM A tavern owned by a childhood pal where many of the yard employees used to go after work. The current depot is two full 'generations' removed from what I'm modeling. When I saw it, it had tan shingles and white trim, like this: Then the roof got gray shingles, but kept the white trim. When Flagstaff took the building over, it got repainted in the 'historic' scheme with the green trim, so to me, at least, the darn thing has become borderline unrecognizable, as much of the downtown has. Joes Bar is a crystal shop, and the last news I got was that the Grand Canyon Cafe kept the sign but is no longer a cafe. And now with the quiet zone rules, no more air horns blasting through the two grade crossings. But, never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that La Posada at Winslow would not just survive, but become a legendary "Harvey House" again, and that I'd be able to stay in it. So change isn't all bad here. If you are a Santa Fe fan, and have a bucket list, put that one on it.
At least they didnt change the architecture of the depot as far as I can see. Now that would have been beyond sad...
