New (old) project. Time to get the three Renton industrial spur buildings completed. The fellas have been on me about this for some time because we cannot complete the lighting until I get these installed, so here we go.

The first one is the Old Milwaukee substation which is now home for Convergint Tech and ATS Automation.

I took multiple pictures and measurements. Then I drew up a plan combining prototype info and our space requirements.

Then I built a foamcore structure from the plan.

Now it's time to build it. I'm using JTT Architectural brick sheets (Item no. 97442). Using the Micromark square it jig makes quick work of this simple structure.

I'm going to use styrene sheet to create depth on this building and then cover the protrusions with more brick. Given that, it was easy to use .030 corner angle to brace the outer corners. Here it is tonight.

Time to call it a day.

Making progress on the Old Milwaukee Substation. After cutting out the two windows for this wall, I started adding the .030 protruding brick sections.

Once glued in place, I cut the brick strips to cover them.

You can see in these last two shots I cut out a piece of .080 styrene for the main entry to the building. It is my intent to put a photo of a staircase on this piece and then cover it with smoked acetate to stimulate the building interior.

Welcome back guys. Just wanted to start by thanking everyone who visits our thread and a special thank you to those diehards that participate and comment every week. You guys are the best.

Tonight started with a visit from our good friend Greg Amer. Greg is a model railroader and real time BNSF guy. We've known each other for long time and he's getting back into the hobby after a stint doing other things. I'm thrilled he asked to be part of our crew. He asked to do ballast, so we put him right to work on the resurrection project along the photo backdrop.

Meanwhile Scott put more touches on his railfan scene.

His next addition will be chain link fence at the entrance to the path. I love this scene.

I continued work on the Old Milwaukee Substation. Tonight I added brick on the far right sections and put in a service door. But the big project was working on the forced perspective interior. I chose a camera shot from the net that depicts a stairway, then flipped it horizontal to fit the building. Once printed, I glued it to my cut out and started adding the styrene for the window system.

I used 030x.25 styrene strips for the vertical sections. Then once dried, I added 030x080 strips for the facing trim.

Here is how it's taking shape through tonight's progress:

Next I'll build the window and door bracing and give it a shot of dark gray paint. Then I'll drop in some smoked acetate I have and hopefully we'll have this section looking as intended; like you're peering inside a building from the parking lot.

Well that's it for now, thanks for checking in.

Here is a recap from last night. Ed successfully brought power to a new outlet under the table. This will give us a couple of power sources near the electronics that run the defect detector. In addition he rigged up a remote on/off switch for that system.

Rey installed a decoder in one of my locomotives, specifically the BNSF Dash 9 shown in this pic.

I changed the pic I want to use on the Old Milwaukee substation.

I also added more depth to the entry way, although it's hard to see that in this shot.

Most of my evening was spent on the above and then switching to the storefront. Here is a shot of the window trim being put together using styrene, graph paper and a combination of blue tape and blutack.

While all this was going on Doug and Scott continued working on ballast in Maple Valley.

A fairly productive evening. Until next week...

I like that deeper perspective of this shot. It should look pretty neat when you get the framing in.

    Thanks,

That is a very interesting way to add perspective to a building Mike, what a cool idea.

More work today on the Old Milwaukee Substation. Finished the front entry first. Started by completing the window panes. Then test fit everything.

Still didn't like the way the picture looked behind the door so vowed to change that before doing anything else. After trying a bunch of different schemes to make it work, I settled on using photoshop to drop in a carpeting pic behind the door. It's not ideal, but it works. You can see that in the next pic.

Then I glued the front entry to the frame. I also decided to use .093 Plaskolite acrylic for the windows. It was easy to cut with the chop saw and then sand to final dimension. I test fit everything, including the smoked acetate which is directly behind the acrylic.

Once satisfied I took it apart and painted the frame. (pic is blurry but only one I have).

While that dried, I began work on the two remaining windows. First I put reflective material on the foamcore to hide it from view. I then used 030 styrene and cut the shapes using a combination of xacto blades and the nibbler. I cut and applied brick to the styrene. For the curved window, I put the keystone in the arch, then worked backwards to the vertical sections.

Before calling it a night I put everything together for a final pic.

Next thing to do is finish the window panes, then it's off to the paint booth before final assembly. Should be done soon.

That is great stuff Mike. I built my outfit to have folks look at the trains, other than the surrounding buildings and such. It helps that nothing on my outfit is worth looking at besides the trains LOL. You are doing some prize winning stuff here.
    Please carry on Sir.

It was a rockin good time on the ol' RGW tonight. Lots to go over including a remote visit from a regular. First, Rey continued work on the Dash 9, installing new LED headlights. Which by the way, look fantastic in person.

Scott added more details to his railfanning scene, adding a chain link fence.

Doug was busy adding ground foams along a hillside near the Renton Yard.

Greg dropped in tonight to finish up the reballasting of Maple Valley.

That section is really coming together.

We had a surprise visit, albeit remote, from Wain. He's been on extended leave, assisting family in Florida. He sent us pics of his Renton Yard service building, which is coming along nicely.

As for me, I started the evening painting the Old Milwaukee Substation a base coat of Krylon Oxide Red.

Since that was going to take all evening to dry thoroughly, I pulled out background building #2, Wesco Supply, and started mapping out how I want this basic warehouse to look. I also wanted to make sure I have the right types of styrene siding and in correct quantities, before diving in.

Well that's a wrap from up here in rainy WA. A good night to be indoors working on trains. Thanks for checking in.

Tonight I had the chance to start detailing the bricks on the Old Milwaukee Substation. I use 3 colors for bricks, the base coat is oxide red, the individual bricks are then randomly painted ATSF Tuscan and flat brown.

Neatness is not required, just being random. After this dries I will seal the entire area with clear matte. Then we will add the mortar.

The structure is looking great, Michael. Definitely like the brick painting technique and the photo was a great addition. It provides amazing depth.
