I recently did a lubrication job on a bli Hudson j1e and a bli ac4 cab forward and now the locks run but the tender shorts out. I used atlas conductive oil, some dry graphite with ptfe, and labelle 102. The dry graphite was used in the trucks of the tenders and the atlas oil and labelled 102 was used on the appropriate spots on the loco. Please help. Have no idea how to get working again.
1. Don't use graphite. It may be slick, but it's a powder, and acts like sand in the works when it gets old. 2. You used too much oil somewhere. If the locomotives run without the tenders, that's good. You don't have to disassemble the motors and clean each armature. But you do get to disassemble whatever is shorting out and get the oil off of it.
So use liquid lubricant instead of the graphite, got ya. Oh I also forgot to mention that I used white grease for the loco gears.
Oh dear Baldwin, I had the insulated portion of the wheels on the wrong side. Wow I can't believe I missed that. Thanks Woodone
Ya, I only just got in to the hobby within the last year. I've been a fan of this hobby since kid but I haven't been to afford it until recently. So I'm still learning things.
Some years back, I visited a club event open to the public. It was well attended and suddenly the trains stopped and club members spent nearly a half hour trying to troubleshoot a puzzling short circuit. You can guess the cause -- the rear truck on an observation car had been spun around. I was snookered by a short on a Bachmann steam locomotive and after dismantling the whole thing, realized that a tender axle was defective and was made without an insulator on one side! Nice.
