Yesterday when the HVAC guy was here to fix my boiler, he asked about my trains. I talked a little bit and thought, hey. I'll show him a little bit. Keep in mind it been since March since I ran any trains at all. Where they sit is where they were last stopped. I haven't cleaned track much less my dusty cars and locos.
I really should put them away on long breaks like that.
Any way I discovered CRC 6-26 last year some time and have been thoroughly impressed. This is a startup video after months of sitting....

I use Bright Boy abrasive cleaners only when necessary, such as to remove glue or paint from the tops of the rails, because the abrasiveness will naturally leave microscopic scratches in the rails, which will then collect more dirt and grime and the cycle repeats itself. A model railroad club reports you can see the scratches under 10x power. I use the Bright Boys only to wrap them in alcohol-soaked paper towels and wipe down the tracks maybe twice a year, and run a train with two Centerline rolling D35 cleaners occasionally. I by far prefer the rolling action rather than a stationary cleaning pad which, in my opinion, just spreads the dirt and grime unless you change the pads every few feet.

Well if I ran trains more often than not I suppose a bright boy would work. I started using a stainless steel washer years to gleam my tracks and that worked great. But when it sits idle for to long it doesn't really matter does it?
My next goal is to get as many metal wheels on cars as I can. That is the other thing that improves this even more.

Gcav, agreed; nothing but metal wheels, and a cleaning (spinning the wheels on an alcohol-soaked paper towel on the rails) of the locomotive as needed in addition to keeping the layout room as dust-free as possible (mine has no windows and only one door in). And replacing the sintered metal wheels of the typical Athearn locomotive with NWSL wheels.

Dust free is a pipe dream in my world. Lol. I live on a gravel road that gets plenty of traffic.
Maybe someday I will put the railroad in a sterile vacuum chamber.

gcav17 hope your health improves , strokes are not fun. i my self have had one in my 30's. now in my late 50's i worry about that more. you should get back down there and run your trains,. for me it relieves stress ect. i understand that getting tired thing too. i as well get tired and then no motivation. but i find if i just go to my track and spend my personal time playing , building ect it really helps to relieve stress ect . i really enjoyed your video . i do hope you continue to get down there and build / play with your trains. oh and post some more pics ect . we all enjoy pics and videos. :) relaxation is the key word .

Well my stroke was over two years ago. I was 47 at the time. I still get those stupid nap ideas. But if I stay busy those feelings go away. I am pretty much back to about 100% physically. Mentally about 80 to 90 . Depending on the day. The worse part is remembering names of people. If I don't see them often enough my memory gets all foggy on that. And there are little things my poor little brain just can't comprehend anymore.
And trains has gone further down my list of priorities. I am not really happy about that but it is what it is for the time being.
