Hellow everyone, New to the site so help me out if I posted in the wrong place. Returning from a absence of MR for about 6 years. Want to model the McCloud River RR. But I am having a hard time finding some SD 38 in N Scale. Can anyone help me out with a source. I think that you can kitbash one fro a SD 38-2 but think that is a little over my head right now. Any sugestions.
Hey Mccloud: I made mine from a Kato SD40. I still have to modify the exhaust stacks but it is a credible representation of the prototype. I basically removed the front radiator fan and filled in the hole with sheet plastic. The decals are from Micoscale.
i would also have to say that "Kitbashing" one is your only option. I did a pair some years ago for a friend, painted in DM&IR colors. Jerry G.
I sure could use a set - the DT&I had some of the very first ones to roll off the assembly line, they survived into the CN era, and then sold to the Reading and Northern, so they wore at least four schemes - DT&i orange, GTW blue, CN black and R&N yellow and green.
Thanks for the replys guys. Would like to know from Np/GN Bill if you would be interested in doing one for me. If you can please let me know what parts I would need to get you and the price that you would charge. I think that if I would have one to look at I could get the other 2 made myself (hopefully). I also heard that you can take the SD-40 and put a GP-38 rear end on it to make it look right.
NP?GN Bill: Why not just put SD40 trucks under the Atlas GP38? Are the Atlas and Kato not compatible?
Hi Flash: You need to have a long wheelbase on the SD. It also had the long dynamic brake housing with two cooling fans. I think I looked into that possibility, but it would not work. I would have actually grafted on a GP38 rear section of the long hood, but I didn't have one at the time. I'm not sure if Atlas and Kato trucks are interchangable come to think of it? Mc Cloud, let me think about it for a while, I'm in the middle of a rather large project right now recreating the 1976 American Freedom Train.
No problem NP/GNBill. I know how it gets when we are in the middle of projects. Don't want to put to much on your plate.
NP?GN Bill: Thanks for the info. Always like to get that stuff as you can never tell when it will be helpful in some other combination or kitbashing project.
