For me, it is not running rotary hoppers/gondolas with the rotary end toward the locomotive. I have a friend in the club that sets up his bathtub unit train with the BN green Rotary End stripe pointing away from the locomotive. It is a bit of a running joke now, but if anybody has seen this photo, you know why having the rotary coupler on the right side is important: 6398F03B-07C2-4BDF-B7CC-CF85A9EA6DA8.jpeg

I HAVE to agree about the MT trip pins. I admit that it's my fault, though. I'm just another who hasn't sat down and painted them !!! To me, they loosely represent my brake lines.
The fact that there are no accurate SDP-40s in N scale.
Certain prominent roads are ignored 'til they're gone (EJ&E, C&EI, SP&S, IT, GM&O... and you know of more !!!).
Weathered cars. We should have a choice in this.
DCC only locomotives. I run DC and have passed on a few "DCC only" releases.
It snows here in Joliet, IL. Can anyone fix that ??? :)

I think the death of rolling stock kits is a big one. Nobody really makes good high-quality kits anymore. Athearn Blue Box is no longer, and neither are the more detailed kits like Ambroid. Atlas bought the HO Branchline kits and turned them into ready-to-roll models. Obviously they are the same cars that were previously in kit form, so why use the money and resources in China to build them in the factory instead of just selling them as kits? It would be cheaper that way. It would take almost no extra effort to offer any model in kit or RTR form, so I’m surprised that most manufacturers don’t do this. Intermountain and Exactrail are the only ones I can think of that do.

More forum related (not necessarily this one) but, for me, it's thoughtfully replying to a post only to have one or more people reply after you with the same info as if you never posted anything at all, with no acknowledgment whatsoever.....and it's not just the "must have been typing at the same time" thing.

    (Lol) I had to.

    Pet peeves :
Towns - people describing points on their railroad as "towns". Railroads have stations, highways have towns.

Rabid non-prototype people - Somebody asks a question about the prototype and gets a prototype answer, which is followed by a half dozen people saying no you don't have to do that or you can do anything you want or contradicting what was just said The OP wanted to know about the prototype, if he just wanted to make something up he wouldn't have asked the question.

Prototype for everything - People ask questions about the prototype and are told what the prototype does 99.99% of the time followed by a dozen posts contradicting that post with every one off, unique, only happens in one place or one time in the entire country examples.

They didn't make my model types - people whining about a manufacturer who just introduced a new model but it was the phase 3 version instead of the phase 4 or had type A doors when they wanted type B, when the major manufacturers haven't produced a single new wooden underframe car in the last 50 years.

Just asking types - people who ask very detailed and an involved questions that take research to answer. Asking for very detailed explanations and diagrams or pictures. After spending hours helping answer their questions, asking them how they are going to use the info, they just say, "Oh, I'm not going to do anything with it, I was just curious."

It sticks in my craw when I see people run their trains at 300 scale MPH. I once visited a Lionel club with two of my most treasured post-war locomotives and was instantly alarmed when the host had them flying around the layout at alarming speeds. Magne-Traction notwithstanding, I was certain they were headed on to the floor and asked him to slow the trains down. He did so, but only by a tiny bit. I then put a quick end to this madness by taking my locomotives and leaving, never to return.

Have to agree here. It's not something I dwell on though...but still hate seeing it. People can run their trains at whatever speed they want. Rule #1;) I run mine slower. It takes longer to get all the way around. Other then looking more realistic....it makes the layout seem bigger when it take longer to get around it. I hope i am not the only one who likes seeing slower moving trains.

If people...like me cant afford one of those fancy put it over the track speedometer thingys one can easily time their trains. Measure out 12 inches on a straight section of your layout. Mine is easy. My Unitrack double crossovers are exactly 12" long. :D:p
Everyone has a cellphone with a timer/stopwatch. Time your trains over that 12" sectrion and go to this website to convert the seconds into scale MPH.

    http://www.stonysmith.com/railroad/speedcalc.asp

You may be surprised at how much faster you are running your trains vs prototypical speeds for your trains. Its also easy to google how fast your type of train should/would run. JMO (y)

O scale layouts (I'm not against O scale) in train shows where they constantly run the smoke. In a short time the place stinks! This is especailly annoying, not to mention I'm sure it's not good for your breathing when your club has a layout running next to it. I'm surprised it has not off the smoke detectors. Wouldn't that be a hoot! :ROFLMAO:

And some of the people at the show, whether it be exhibitors or visitors, are on oxygen!

Well, I am guilty of this, but mine is not at all close to something minor. Nor is it a rarity. All we have ever had in N, is the GP9 with four 36" fans, over and over and over to death. I wonder why not the later version with two 48" fans. A major spotting detail, on a very, very common and as yet un-produced engine. So, I don't even feel close to bad about my request.

The other part of this question. One of my 2 sisters and my Brother and their children have to resort to wishing me a HAPPY BIRTHDAY, new year, merry christmas via faceb. to do that, especially when they all have my cellphone number !

There was a classic satirical post here some time ago that I wish I'd saved. It began with the sentence, "I have not seen this model, but it is crap." The post then went on to explain that anyone who did not agree with this opinion was also crap.

That leads to my point, which I think needs no further explanation.

What Sticks in my Craw? People who take this hobby way too seriously and expect other to conform to their way of doing the hobby. Do copper trip pins bother me, no. They are not air hoses they are trip pins. If you want to be more like the prototype, cut the trip pins off and take the centering springs out of your couplers. Prototype cars and locomotives do not have centering springs. To be honest, I leave the prototype at work. On my layout, it's my little world, there's no Rule G, I don't have to pee in a bottle or get locked out of the train room, if one of my cars or locomotives derail for an unknown reason. This is a hobby and there is room in this hobby for everyone. While I'm on the subject, I do not weather my rolling stock or locomotives, I get enough of that at work. My little laborers on my layout, keep my equipment looking brand new. I also dislike graffiti. If you're a rivet counter, I'm not going to tell you to stop, but don't tell me I have to be a rivet counter. What I find funny is, people today are 100% rivet counter or 100% free for all. What ever happened to the middle ground. Everybody's idea of fun is slightly different, don't chase people away from the hobby because their idea of fun is different from yours. If they enjoy running their PRR K4 Pacific on a double stack train, so be it. They are having fun and that is the entire idea behind a hobby. I'm not expecting anyone to agree with me, but this is what "Sticks in my Craw" ;)

Nicely written Rich S.. I sometimes think that some model railroaders do harm to the hobby by finding deficiencies in nearly everything made and publicly posting their displeasure. Manufacturers invest large sums of money and time to develop models, only to read a post by someone complaining that there should be one less louver on the battery box on the right side on Phase IIb versions. If other modelers pile on, sales suffer and the manufacturer hesitates to produce additional models. Sure we want perfectly detailed stuff and continuous improvement is a good thing, but we have so much to be thankful for.

Another thing that I wish were more prevalent are drawings. I think I might be one of the rivet counters that you guys complain about, but I feel that there is a lot of engineering that kind of gets overlooked in models. When was the last time you guys saw a photo of a locomotive truck that wasn’t attached to a locomotive? I would like to see research more available on the Internet. Where did all the technical drawings and photos go? We can’t build models if the only resources are stereotypical 3/4 view railfan photos taken from a Metra station.
