Welcome back everyone. I hope you all enjoyed the weekend, despite the warmer then usual temps. I heard one report that said the heat in the Midwest all the way to New England was hotter than Death Valley. Not sure if that was true or not, but I think the freight cars in the work shop were getting a little soft! Saturday: Was as planned. Jared's car is ready for another semester of college. No real train activity as the car and visiting with future Father-in-Law took all day but we had an enjoyable time. Sunday: It was so hot, that I just took it easy. Some switching lists were prepared for the upcoming RPM meet in Saint Louis but that was about it. So how about you? What did you accomplish? Let us know. Well -- I got inspired. I started back on a long in the works project. Then promptly stalled out. Saturday: Removed the shells and the previously installed decoders. Worked on the original light boards - to accept new 4 function hard wired decoders. (Reason for this to follow). Then started to gather up all the detail parts that are needed -- that's when the project stalled. Searched and searched for one specific detail that I had purchased a couple of years ago --- I couldn't find them...... damn!! Sunday --- the search continued -- no joy. Well, basically did 2 things this weekend. I have a double-track bridge I'm working on. Spent some good times building the bridge track. This is 2 Walthers bridges jammed together with a tower pier in the middle. Used N scale Code 55 track for the guard rail. Soldered all that together then ripped off the ties and glued it in. Takes some doing, but better than dealing with individual rails. 2nd thing I did was pulled quite few refrigerator cars out of the cabinet and set them on the layout. Got out about 20 of them. 6 need some couple and truck adjustment after years in storage, so I weeded those out to the "repair-order" tray. Then I ran some high-ball reefer trains. The C&O also ran FGE cars that were maintained out the Clifton Forge yard. I scored a bunch of these cars last year from the C&O Historical Society and finally pulled some out of the box. This is of my first try at 3D printing. Tower footings for my bridge tower. Needs paint and some weathering work, but overall I see some more 3D printing in my future.
I am finally in a position to do a bit more. So, got out the surviving T-Trak modules. Repaired damage caused by the ex and her friends. Set up a tiny circle with some added wiring. Yippee! First time in three years, running a train.
It’s 1970something. And due to track work on other lines, the Southern Pacific ran a few freights through Playa Desnuda. It was a rare treat to see an old U30C in the consist. They would all be gone by 1985
Running trains is a good thing!! Took me quite a few years after we moved. Moving, building the workshop first, then finishing the attic. I know what its like to see/hear those things bang, clang, and toot after years and years. Awesome stuff!
Nothing serious. Got both DCC++ and the Pi into a $1 translucent pencil box, so now I have portable DCC for the under construction modules. This meant I could run a real train for the first time and find a few niggles to fix. The biggest one was the loco itself, needed some tweaking. I meant to solder the leads from the SwitchPilot Servo v2 for the 2 push button switches I installed on the backside of the module, green for mainline route and red for diverging. That way it’s easy to be sure you don’t send one the wrong way! Next weekend/Friday I’ll get that done if my daughter allows me to take the trolley track down!
