ALL other US railroads should be watching UP lead the way in public relations.

Yes! Hello Norfolk Southern, it'd be so nice to again see 611 and 1218 stretching their legs on your iron.

I agree, having touched 611's pilot and rods in Roanoke last year. But the current NS administration doesn't appear interested because I believe they sold most, if not all 611's varnish. Or did they just lease or loan it?

You're right. In 1994, NS CEO David Goode (long retired) crafted a slash and burn exit from steam during his tenure, bulldozing the Birmingham steam shop, selling the specialized machines, tools and most of the rolling stock. It was a sad end to a glorious program. His replacement, Wick Moorman was a fan and did a fine job of running the railroad, approving the Heritage Unit rollout and establishing close ties with the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum which has sponsored some trips on NS with TVRM power.

As you saw, at least 611 and 1218 are under cover.

4014 stopped at Mason City, IA right now. I reckon it's spending the night there.

Nice coverage, Buddy. Glad you got to see the biggest steam locomotive built. I won't, unfortunately, but have had quite an exposure to steam.

Watched Buddy's videos, too. Awesome! Heading to St. Paul this morning with an old buddy just to go see her roll! She leaves Mason City today and ends up on display tonight and tomorrow at St. Paul Union Depot Until Fri when she heads to Duluth. It is going to be FUN!
