Hi folks Let me show how i built spoke wheels for a steam loco. Die Speichen: The spokes: Vor dem Löten Before soldering Nach dem Löten After soldering Ausgelöst. Released. Das erste Spezialwerkzeug: The first special tool: Der Aufnahmedorn muss natürlich in eine Spannzange. The mandrel has to be clamped in a collet. Sonst passt der Rundlauf nicht. Otherwise the concentricity does not fit. Der Radreifen: The tire: Herstellen der Rohlinge aus Ø10mm Neusilber. Making blanks of Ø10mm nickel silver. Auf Ø7,5mm aufbohren und auf ca. 22mm Länge abstechen: Drill to Ø7.5mm and cut off to approx. 22mm length: Dann auf die kleine Drehbank und in der Spannzange erst mal sauber auf Ø7,9 ausdrehen: Then turn first on a small lathe in a collet the ID to Ø7,9mm: Dann einen Absatz mit Ø8,3 drehen, 0,8mm tief: Then turn a step with Ø8.3, 0.8mm deep: Dann die Lauffläche andrehen. Then turn the tread. The left edge of the tool corresponds to the angle for the wheel flange. Der Support ist um 3,4° geschwenkt. The support is tilted by 3.4 °. Mit etwas Überlänge abstechen: Cut off with a little extra length: Spannzange wechseln, und die Rückseite des Radreifens fertig drehen: Change the collet, and finish turning the back of the wheel: Soweit erst mal. So far for now.
Die Naben: The hubs: Ein Absatz auf Ø1,4 - 0,8 lang. Der Rest Ø1,8mm. Die ganze Nabe auf Länge 1,55mm abstechen: One step on Ø1,4 - 0,8 long. The rest Ø1,8mm. Cut off the entire hub to length 1.55mm: Die Abstechvorrichtung kann man nicht verstellen. Darum muss man vom Abstich rückwärts denken. The parting device can not be adjusted. That's why I have to think backwards from the blade. Then turn the parting remnant flat: Passt! It fits!
Kurbelbolzenbuchse: Crank pin bushing: Ein Absatz auf Ø1 - 0,8 lang. Der Rest Ø1,4mm. One step on Ø1 - 0.8 long. The rest Ø1,4mm. Auf Gesamtlänge 1mm abstechen: Cut off to a total length of 1mm: Maschinenwechsel Rückseite plan drehen, mit Ø0,6mm durchbohren: Machine change. Turn the rear side flat. Drill through with Ø0.6mm: Gewinde M0,7 schneiden. Spindel wird von Hand gedreht: Cut thread M0.7. Spindle is turned by hand: Passprobe: fitting test: Freie Durchsicht! Free through view!
The soldering of the parts went smoothly. The only challenge was not to get a lot of thread. That's why I soldered the threaded bushing separately later without additional solder. When I lined up the wheels that way, I got a shock, because the driving wheels look the same at first glance. Only when you look closely you see the difference. Since I have to take care when joining later, that I install the two right way around. To mask the wheel tire, I turned a plastic ring, which is put over it. On one wheel, the color got quite thick. Let's see what it looks like after drying. If I don't like it, I will wash it off again.
For the next job I need a Ø3mm slot cutter, 1,5mm wide, with shank Ø1,2mm. Of course, there is no such thing to buy. I had to grind it out of a Ø3mm end mill. Er hat seinen Job schon erfolgreich erledigt. He has already done his job successfully. Jetzt kommt der Montageblock : Now comes the Mounting jig : Ober- und Unterteil sind aus jeweils drei Teilen als Sandwich zusammen gelötet, da das Fräsen etwas kompliziert geworden wäre. Upper and lower parts are soldered together from three parts as a sandwich, because the milling would have become a bit complicated. Hier schleife ich die Mittelteile, die ich mit Sekundenkleber auf eine Stahlunterlage geklebt habe, auf 1,4mm Dicke: Here I grind the middle sections, which I glued with superglue on a steel underlay, to 1,4mm thickness: Da das Zahnrad in der Mitte 1,5mm dick ist, musste noch etwas weg gefräst werden. Since the gear in the middle is 1.5mm thick, something had to be milled away. Da kam der Fräser von oben zum Einsatz: The previously mentioned cutter was used: Die Achse wird in den Montageblock eingelegt. The axle is inserted in the mounting block. The position of the gear is precisely defined by a sharpened M1 set screw. Die Räder werden mit Loctite 648 aufgeklebt... The wheels are glued with Loctite 648 ... ...und mit den Stiften ausgerichtet. ... and aligned with the pins. Dafür sind die kleinen Bohrungen im Unterteil. There for are the small holes in the lower part.
Weiter geht es mit den Achsen : It continues with the Axles : So sehen sie aus, wenn man die Räder abzieht: This is what they look like when you pull off the wheels: Die Nasen habe ich erst mal mit einer Zange platt gedrückt, damit man die Achse sauber in einer Spannzange spannen kann. First I flattened my noses with pliers, so you can clamp the axis firmly in a collet. An einer Seite habe ich erst mal einen Zapfen mit Ø0,9mm angedreht, und mit Stabilit Express beschichtet: On one side, I first turned a pin with Ø0.9mm, and coated it with Stabilit Express: Nach dem Aushärten wurde das dann wieder auf Ø1,2mm Achsendurchmesser abgedreht: After curing, this was then turned back to Ø1.2mm axle diameter: Dann erst die eine Seite auf Ø1mm abgedreht... Then one side turned to Ø1mm ... ...und dann die andere: ... and then the other: Dann habe ich die Lokteile mal lose aufeinader gelegt: Then I just stacked the parts of the locomotive loose:
As always, thank you for sharing your work. And it is fascinating to see the process, this way the final product is the icing on the cake. Speaking of which, for comparison, here is a shot of my Märklin loco from the 88923 set. It is quite amazing what the spoked wheels do for your loco. They make it a work of art.
Is the original spoke assembly a stack of etched metal pieces sandwiched together and then soldered? I never thought of doing it that way. Awesome.
If anyone wants to see more projects like this check out the OP’s website, this is just the tip of the iceberg...
I wheel was enough to be impressed but 6 times that is truly masterful. What about the smaller pilot and trailing wheels ?
