I think I am liking the retaining walls. First set emplaced but not fastened.

Nice, John. Eye catching. The elements work well together.

So, for the last week and a half, I've been fighting with a P2K, GP-9 (very old) that I've been upgrading to DCC. Various problems had me convinced motor was dead, ordered another and got the new one tonight. After trying it on DC and not having it work, found out that the DC power pack was faulty and the original motor was NOT dead. Installed the new motor anyway, Got the decoder programmed, and wired in and tried it out. Ran really rough and then shorted out the NCE Powerhouse Pro. Ended up tearing all apart again, checked the trucks and determined split gears on all four axles. Luckily I still had some from a previous engine when I bought two packs of 6 and had only used 4. Installed them, checked the wheels with the NMRA gauge, reassembled, rewired, and tested it out and it now works really great. Next up is installing the LED lights and reassembling with the body which has initial weathering done on it.

Question! The marker(?) lights up on the 4 corners of the body. Do they come on only in direction of travel or do they all stay on in both directions? Also, do they point forward, or out at a 45 degree angle. May add fiber optic cables but need to know where their light source needs to be.

The markers on the gp7-9 face out at about 45 degrees as having the opportunity to run said locos.

The markers are either all on on-call off depending on the engineer's preference.

    Have fun John

Thanks, Vince! Good info and given the restrictions, probably won't light 'em up.

Here's a picture of what I've been working on. Only the beginnings of weathering and none on trucks and fuel tank.

John a lot of good rock Island power pics over at.

    In the RI section.

Looks like you still need to add the pilot's floorboards still.

Been doing mostly miscellaneous tasks, including building another freight station, and tracking down stuff I want (need?) instead of making progress. I do run trains almost everyday to ensure track work is adequate and fixing some minor problems before gluing down track and starting ballasting. However, I felt the need to post yet another picture of the layout, this time with many more pieces of rolling stock!

Going to add a small, portable extension for outdoors photography and the highlight is a trestle I bought many years ago.

I want to add a 3D image to CadRail and so I'm learning Fusion 360 and this is where I'm at right now. Got some more to do, but happy with current progress.

Is Fusion 360 free for a hobbyist? I've read conflicting comments on that.

I'm using SketchUp which I download a couple years ago. Now I think you use it via the Cloud somehow. I'm happy with it but always looking for something that I might like better,

Fusion 360 can be used free by hobbyist (as I am). It is the full program, but lacking some team communication type items and is not to be used for commercial purposes. What you need to look for is what they entitle "Personal" which is a new classification.

Like most true CAD programs, I find that the learning curve is steep, but, so far, worth the effort.

Looks like you are getting good results with Fusion 360. I also use it and have found it to be quite satisfactory, and if you're not familiar with parametric modeling software, there are tutorials included. (I skipped them, having had experience with other modeling software and just made it a voyage of discovery, learning on the fly.) I don't like it as well as SolidWorks, but it doesn't cost the major $$$$$ that SW does, either. I wasn't, however, aware that Fusion 360 models can be imported into CadRail, a definite plus.

@RailMix - Thanks, CadRail can import DXF files which can be exported by Fusion 360. I haven't actually tried it so don't know how well it will work.

@RailMix - Tried it out and it didn't work! DXF of a barrel loaded in CadRail, but was not the rendered object. Merely some of the intermediate figures. Oh well. Still learned a lot about Fusion 360 and will continue w/ drawing.
