Drove from Denver to the Bay Area last week, and we took some time to stop and explore Glenwood Springs, CO. When we took our California Zephyr trip a few years ago, it looked like a cool place to wander. Doc Holliday is even buried in the old cemetery overlooking the town! Here are some shots I took of the Amtrak station. The Zephyr was running late, so no shots of any trains. The station entrance And exterior shots
The view when entering the station The waiting area from the entrance Yep - the Zephyr is late.. was delayed in Iowa and at Fort Morgan, due to freight (this was last Thursday)
The passenger waiting area My tired and patient wife, Jackie, while I take train-related photos The staircase, leading to the street
There is a really cool safe in the station office. I asked the agent if I could take a photo, and she let me into the office, so I didn't need to "shoot through the bars". And, let me pull it open I only saw the Zephyrs twice, on the trip. Once, going westbound (#5) near Wendover, UT (May 31 at 9:30am, so running very late), and an eastbound (#6) on the grade just east of Spanish Fork, UT (between Provo and Helper, on the west side of the pass) (Friday June 14 at around 11am -- VERY late)
Neat interior pictures Rick -- thanks for posting them! This easterner/midwesterner is embarrassed to ask, but what railroad built the station, i.e. who owned it prior to the modern megamergers?
Ah, thanks. In the mid-90s my wife and I stopped at a depot in Colorado Springs, CO and I was confusing it with Glenwood Springs, CO.
What a beautiful station, really nice to see it decorated the way it is, almost right outta' the 50's!! Except for the electronics in the pic, this could be a long time ago, waitin' on the "Rio Grande Zephyr"!
According to Googling, 1904. If so, built by predecessor the D&RG RR. Here is where Wikipedia fails, (again?), with bad info.....? Just for fun: https://www.train-orders.com/TOUR/D/DRG/DRG.html
Might this account be more to your liking? https://www.postindependent.com/news/rolling-through-100-years-of-depot-history/ Wikipedia references multiple dates: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denver_and_Rio_Grande_Western_Railroad#Denver_&_Rio_Grande_Western "In 1901, the Denver & Rio Grande merged with the Rio Grande Western, consolidating in 1908. However, the railroad was weakened by speculators, who had used the Rio Grande's equity to finance Western Pacific Railroad construction. The United States Railroad Administration (USRA) took over the D&RG during World War I. In 1918 the D&RG fell into receivership after the bankruptcy of Western Pacific. The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW or DRGW) was incorporated in 1920, and formally emerged as the new re-organization of the old Denver & Rio Grande Railroad on July 31, 1921."
The above seems to be a slightly messy write up. Information I had researched showed the Rio Grande Western RY was merged into (that so-called "consolidation") D&RG RY on August 1, 1908. That the D&RG continued on and was purchased by the D&RGW on November 15, 1920. That the D&RG continued to exist until absorbed into the D&RGW, 1921. Anyhow, that depot was built by the D&RG.
