It's time for my annual post reminding us of the terrible wreck of the Lake Shore Limited on this date in 1940 in my home town of Little Falls, NY. Hudson 5315 was scrapped following this wreck, the only one of the 275 to be so removed from service other than retirement.

I have a book titled "The Railroaders" that talks a little about this wreck. the engineers name was Jess Earl. the author said he may have entered the curve too fast and shut the throttle off and the slack pushed the engine off the track. the road forman survived. it also said the baggage car somehow rolled by itself ahead of the wreck for some distance. interesting book.

If you take a look at my RailImages album titled 'Steam in Black and White' there are some photos of the cars after the wreck, plus construction of the 1947 track rerouting. Road Foreman Bayreuther lived to be over 100 years old.
