Not looking to adopt, but like many others looking to streamline. I am ready to reduce the locomotive roster by about 500 locomotives right now. And possibly more in the future. It will start with the units that do not have decoders, or what is in the list above. If I can sell or trade for cars I will.

A further perspective on the accumulation of large quanitities of model trains... locomotives in particular. Most of the largest collections are owned by individuals that have been in the hobby 20+ years. It's really not as much a factor of a large income (six figures left of the decimal point ;) )... though large incomes makes it easier. I find that the percentage of one's available income dedicated to the hobby varies a lot... but if one has few vices (excluding model railroading)... the collection of items will grow steadily. I've NEVER earned a six figure income... and still have mananged to accumulate a large amount of stuff. I've acquired over 400 locomotives and couple thousand rolling stock items... most of this collection has come in the last 10 yrs using about 10% of my net salary. 15 yrs before that (pre-2002) my life was very difficult... young kids... low pay... high expenses... missed out on lots of stuff back then. I was glad to get whatever I could... usually the lower end (LifeLike, Bachmann) locomotives for under $30 and occasional Atlas or Kato $40 to $50. I remember getting mail order rolling stock for $1.00 to $1.50 each too. Those great deals of the late 1990' to early 2000's were days we may not see again... LL BL-2, FA1/FA2(A/B set) & SD or SW units for $15 to $30... a great time to accumulate stuff.

Well.....I feel pretty good about my being able to say...I don't need another Steamer or deasesil on my roster!!

Of course my main source for purchases is that auction site!!

I must say I am impressed with the listings from some of you!!

I am also into HO scale......

Well said, especially for an old skool DC modeler like me. I was an active modeler at that time, but the rising expense of the new releases, and a busy career and family edged out my hobby time. Now upon retirement 20 years later, I find that my older units still run great and I have no plans to get rid of them. I did however test the waters recently with a pair of Atlas CNJ SD-35s and am very impressed.

I just went through this thread. What a walk down memory lane. Noticed a lot of TB'ers that aren't with us anymore.

I did not realize this thread went all the way back to August 2002. Almost 17 years ago which was about the time I joined TB. It was funny to see some of my old posts... things I don"t remember posting LOL

    My roster is even smaller!
Kato GS4 (1st gen, now DCC)
F3A SP (last gen, Now DCC)
    End roster.
I’d like another A or a B, but I spend too much on LEDs and other electronics right now.

I won't list them all but if I never buy another locomotive, there is no way I could possibly need anything else.
    35 steam engines
    50 plus diesels
    and one lone Gas Turbine.

    At least that's what's visible.

I have 14 storage tracks at the turntable with a locomotive on each track. Its too cold to go out and list whats there.

    2 logomotives on the mains
1 Atlas S2 working the yard
1 CSX sitting on the interchange waiting for the mains to clear so it can enter the yard.
1 Arnold S2 parked at Stevens Concrete.
1 E5 hooked to the Excursion train at the Station.
1 4-8-4 one display in the railroad park.
2 SD40u at the engine shop.
1 GP 38 at the fuel island.

They all run...but only about 6 with decoders.
The 2 SD40u have decoders...sadly both are fried.

There are 2 on the deadline. Both run...sorta...lol
