OK, I got real cocky after Pieter pointed me in the right direction to get my switch 8 mkII working so I decided to get brave and work on decoder pro. Bad choice. Now my locos don't work!

Athearn Challenger 4-6-6-4 #3943 Doesn't work Doesn't work with the Powercab
Kato MLW Hiawatha series FP7A #950 Works OK still with the NCE Powercab
Kato MLW Hiawatha series FP7B #951 Doesn't work with the Powercab
Kato MLW Hiawatha series FP7A #952 Doesn't work with the PowerCab

HOWEVER, all four locos work on my actual layout with analog control. AND the three above that don't work with the Powercab Do work as select loco 127 which was a consist I was playing with. Strange since the consist 127 was created using the long addresses of 3943, 951, and 952, but selecting the locos as 3943, 951, and 952 renders me nothing!

What did I do and how do I fix it. Oh by the way, none of them worked using decoder pro. it appeared to be reading the CVs and obviously writing them, because i screwed up my addresses.

    Help

You created a consist, 127, and that address is loaded in the advanced consist CV (19). You need to remove them from the consist before you can run them individually.

OK, I feel really stupid now! thanks for showing me how stupid I am Rbrodzinsky! I maybe to dense/old to start out in this hobby!

I can't get decoder pro to work for throttles. if I have an engine on the track and I select read, it appears to be doing something, but it reads my address of 15227. Not quite sure what I am doing wrong in this part of JMRI.

    Dan,

Did you save roster entries for each of the locos? If so, then the easiest method is to do a decoder reset on each, and then reload the CVs from saved JMRI profiles.

To manually remove a loco from an advanced consist, set CV19=0. Then, to ensure addresses are correct, rewrite the individual loco’s address, again (in Decoder Pro, write the Basic sheet)

I had already gotten rid of the consist using the Powercab and all locos are working great now

Now to get decoder pro to work and talk to the locos. Watching a YouTube video on setting up decoder pro. I’m sure I’ll be back to the board for more help. Thanks

Decoder reads and writes to my locos so how come I can’t get the throttle to talk to them? Power cab works fine with all four. Obviously I have something not turned on1

What throttle are you speaking about?

A stupid question, but do you have the locos on the main track, or the programming track?

At that level of my knowledge there is no stupid question! I’m a week almost into this. I have on the kitchen table two 30” flex tracks connected with power from my power cab. So a programming track. Do I not have something set correctly?

Your PowerCab panel has two sets of track outputs - main and program. A programming track is what is used to write and read the values in the decoders. What is important is that the READ operation can only occur on a programming track. You run the trains on the main track. These outputs must be kept separate (usually done by isolating the programming track with gaps or insulating rail joiners).

You can also do what is called "Program on the Main", which allows writing to a specific loco via its address.

A DecoderPro throttle sends its commands, via the command station, to the Main (not Program) track.

Ok stumbled on to some docs in JMRI talking about a default setting in preferences and by golly the ones for the throttle and other fun stuff were set to Internal. Switched it to NCE and now it is actually reading the CVS and trying to read ones I don’t have. Hehe. Thanks for all your help o may be able to REALLY get myself in trouble now!

    Thanks for all the help
