I know some of you will like this as seen on eBay (BTW, I am neither selling this item nor do I know who is) If you'd like to see more, click: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=486&item=5950932143&rd=1
No, but as ragged as SP was getting toward the end, it woulda just fell apart. ANd not because of arrogant management like UP has... Now all that's needed for the proper prototypical touch is a good coating of grime
That's funny My UP models predate the licensing angst, and I still enjoy them.....I'm not about to give them up or deface them.......But That is still funny!
Does this Kato EMD GP40 have traction tires, or maybe I should ask, do all present day GP40's come equipped with traction tires? I ran across a Bachmann EMD GP40 painted for Burlington Northern, (green and black) that does NOT have traction tires. Is it considered "junk" today, or is it worth running? Just curious...??? Any opinions or experience?
Watash, if I'm not mistaken, that's an SD40 (6 axles, as opposed to 4). Either way, no Kato, Atlas or Intermountain "mainline" diesels have traction tires, and to say they run fine would be an understatement.
Thanks William, the end of this box says," #4609 "EMD" GP40 DIESEL, Burlington Northern. There is a sticker on top that says, "Lighted "Super" 8 Wheel Drive". The engine is numbered 2009 in white letters on the green engine side. The box lid has what looks like an age crack across it that has been taped to hold it together, so I haven't tried to remove the engine from the little box. I did not know Bachmann had brass gears, so this one may be an older one, but it does have all brass wheels too. I don't know if it runs on 6 volts or 12 volts or what, so I haven't tried it at all. I'm trying to learn a bit about "N" scale. Thanks.
Well, Watash, should you venture into the N scale forum and put "traction tires" and "steam" in one sentence, regardless of what the sentence actually says, watch out! As for diesels, though, traction tires are pretty much a dead issue on better quality locos, with the possible exception of very small switchers.
William has about covered it here, but, just bragging... I had a Concor SD50 with traction tires. It was remotored with a Sagami open frame motor. It pulled 75 cars up a two percent grade! Traction tires will help pull more cars, but why? I would rather add more diesels. It looks better and that is the important thing...Look good!!
Make no mistake, I am DEATH on traction tires. I hate them! I had been told long ago that all N scale engines had to have traction tires so they could pull a car, so I was surprised to find this Bachmann engine without them. My question should have been: Is a Bachmann engine worth $25.00 or is it junk anyway?
Can you test run it to evaluate its performance? If it runs satisfactorially, and fills a need/want you have, then I'd say yes it is worth $25.
