Anybody got their hands on the new Scale Trains GEVO release? After all the studying last night, I just could not say no.

If it's half as good as it looks, this should be a beauty!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this locomotive is a landmark N scale product. This will be the new standard by which all other N scale locomotives will be judged by.

    Randy,
I purchased a BNSF C4 and what Metro Red said is spot on. The truck detail is all hand applied. How they did that in N scale is just amazing, as well as all the grab irons, sun shades and I believe cab interior. Also take notice of how good MU hoses and number boards look. I think Scale Trains hit this one out of the park!

Going to their website there is an impressive list of details and multiple photos one can click on the view various areas of the locomotive. And they go as far as to list the minimum radius it will operate on along with the recommended radius and I haven't seen a lot of the manufacturers do that in the past.

A pair of BNSF, a pair of UP. Essentially flawless. Everything works. Don't get no better than that.

What's up with the white mark on the on the left side of the NS units by the logo? None of the NS tier4's have in photos in real life. Is in the production run of the tier4's?

I don't know. It shows up on my UP units too. On black-bodied locos it's real obvious though. The CN version looks like it says "CN1" :)

How easy is the installation of a dcc chip (next 18 plug) in the loco?

I bought one DCC/Sound version and the DC version with the Next18 decoder. Decoder installation is harder than a 6-pin NEM decoder installation but easier than any drop-in light board replacement decoder: You unscrew and pull out the couplers, then remove the shell. You can see the dummy board under the light board towards the rear end of the loco. That comes off easily, but installing the decoder is best done by unscrewing the four screws that secure the light board to the chassis, flipping it over and press-fitting the Next18 decoder in until you hear a snap (this is much harder to do if you do not unscrew the light board). Then flip the board back, replace the screws, the shell and the couplers.

Here's another Q for you rivet counters.

I have noticed in photo's that the short hood and walkways appear to be a very light gray vs the traditional Harbor Mist used on the UP. Is the light gray prototype? I can honestly say I have never seen the top side of a UP GEVO. I called Scale Trains this am and they informed me all UP's have light gray short hood and walkways.

Over the years, they have been "green", Harbor Mist, Armor Yellow and now a "sky gray". Gotta be a reason. Someone will know.

I presume you have the railroad up and running again. Many years ago I "lost" a railroad due to water damage. Things happen!

Yeah, Randy, I got lucky. A bit of scenery damage - which will allow me to try something new, stay tuned - but no operational difficulties.
